Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students move off campus after living in the dorms their freshman year. Lawrence definitely caters to students who want to live off campus, and most students agree that finding somewhere to live off campus is convenient and affordable.

One of the most popular student-dominated off-campus areas is affectionately called the “student ghetto.” While houses here are usually pretty old and can have a few problems, students prefer this area because it’s within walking distance to campus and the bars and restaurants of downtown Lawrence and Massachusetts Street. More expensive living is also available for students willing to pay for it. The Legends Place Apartments are some of the priciest in Lawrence but are extremely nice and new. However, these apartments are not near campus, which is something many students look for when getting a place. The freedom of living off campus is refreshing for students after living with the rules and regulations of the dorms.

Good Prices, Bad Service

It's easy to find a decently priced apartment or house for rent, but often times the landlords don't care too much about fixing broken equipment in a timely fashion. It sure will make you impatient!

Apartments Are Reasonably Priced

After moving from Indiana University and comparing the two universities together in terms of off-campus housing, Lawrence was surprisingly cheaper. And most of apartments are cleaner and quieter. A lot of them, including mine provides a shuttle bus ,which is very nice for stingy college students like myself.

"Student Ghetto"

Surrounding campus are many different areas of student housing. The only thing that separates the "student ghetto" (a misnomer- many of the houses are awesome) are the hills - annoying - but worth it. There are also a variety of extremely nice apt. complexes within 5-10 min drive from campus. Pools, tech labs, gyms, etc., all available.

Cheap living!
