Whatever You Want, Lawrence Probably Has It
Finding something to do on Friday and Saturday nights is never an issue at KU. The off-campus student population is concentrated in a neighborhood affectionately referred to as the "student ghetto." If you're underage, you can wander Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky streets until you find a big house party, where strangers are usually welcome to come in and buy a cup. There are also lots of parties in the dorms, especially McCollom and Oliver. Fake IDs are also extremely popular, but some bars are likely to catch you (Louise's), while others are very lenient (the Hawk). There are also a few clubs such as the Chateau that are 18+. For people over 21, Mass St has a wealth of great bars catering to every social scene. There are several places with good dance floors (Taproom, Replay), cozy, literate hangouts (Henry's), Greek dominated bars (Brother's) and several places where you're liable to see just about anyone (Louise's, Harbour Lights, Barrel House). Lawrence also has a unbelievable music scene, with national tours frequently stopping at the Granada, Bottleneck and Liberty Hall, and there are a number of quality local bands as well. Most of the nightlife in Lawrence revolves around alcohol, and probably about 95% of students drink on a regular basis, but for those uninterested in drinking, Student Union Activities (SUA) puts on cheap movies, free bowling and other activities. If you really want to avoid the alcohol scene, or if you just want to meet people, joining SUA is a great idea. Liberty Hall gets lots of great indie and international films, and there are many great coffee shops downtown where you can find a good conversation any night of the week. The scholarship halls sort of live in their own universe, but they seem to have a mix of drinkers and non-drinkers, so that might be a good place to find alcohol free activities.
