If You're Outside the System, You Probably Hate It
The members of the Greek community give it rave reviews. It certainly is a great way to make friends, meet lots of people of the opposite sex, connect with alumni, and get involved in community service. However, you can do all of those things as an independent, although there might be a little more effort required. By and large, people outside the Greek community find it annoying. If you're not a fan of North Face jackets, Ugg boots, and polo shirts, it's probably not for you. While there are some exceptions, Greeks tend to be preppy and conservative and look down on unaffiliated people. There are many, many Greek houses around campus, and groups of frat guys and sorority girls tend to fill up entire bars, use their numbers to set up camping groups for the best seats at basketball games, and Greeks tend to dominate student Senate elections. The attitude toward Greeks are based mostly on stereotypes. There are many great people in the community who do not fit those descriptions, but there are enough that do to perpetuate the stereotypes.
