Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Kentucky campus has been featured in several recent crime reports, especially crimes against women. However, drastic measures have been instilled to ensure student safety: a large number of officers patrol on bike, foot, and car, and safety buttons have been installed all over campus; just pressing them guarantees a quick response. Unfortunately, services like Catwalk have been handed over from organization to organization in a bidding war, leaving the service under-funded and all but abandoned. The best way to stay safe on campus is to store the campus police phone number in your cell phone and always travel with other students if you have to walk on campus at night. There really is safety in numbers! With a good measure of common sense, students should be safe on campus. Cellular phones are available for checkout at the William T. Young Library to make sure students have some way of being heard. What a great safety measure!

Student Health Services are effective, as well. Being away from home during a sick time is always unsettling but Health Services finds a way to set-up appointments and get students feeling better as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Very Safe

I feel comfortable walking back and forth to the library by myself at night and there are always people walking late at night. Lights are everywhere.

Safe Options Available

The campus crime puts out a crime bulletin alerting individuals of crimes and occurrences. Special security measures are taken if there is an incidence and students can get alerted via email or a text message. There are escorts available if students don't want to talk alone at night. I feel very safe on campus.

SAFE, WELL-MONITORED

As a University of Kentucky alum, I can attest to the fact that campus security was excellent during my three years at UK. There are numerous emergency posts throughout campus, as well as a campus-specific police force, and attention from local and state authorities. I never felt unsafe walking on campus at night, however this is not wholly true for the year that I lived off campus. While the campus is a very safe environment, some of the areas within walking distance but not officially campus property are a little less secure and may warrant better nighttime transportation options from the university to provide off-campus students a safe mode of transportation to their residences.
