Quick Stats

School Slang
  • CRU: Campus Crusade for Christ.
  • Git-r-dun: A phrase of encouragement, for example, “You’re dating her now? Git-r-dun!”
  • Haggin Hell: A name for the very unpopular Haggin Hall boys’ dorm on central campus.
  • The Ho: A term of endearment for Tolly Ho’s.
  • Mac Head: A student who prefers only to use the Mac labs on campus; generally an arts and sciences type.
  • Parking Nazi: An officer likely to give you a ticket if your meter goes over by a minute.
  • Reckon’: As in “I suppose.”
  • Rink rat: Girls who hang out at the ice hockey rink trying to pick up hockey players.
  • The Rose Bowl: The concave grassy area in front of Willy T. on Rose Street.
  • Sweetheart: A person elected to be a favorite of the members of a fraternity or sorority.
  • The Virgin Vault: An all girls’ residence, most often Donovan Hall.
  • Willy T.: A pet name for the William T. Young Library.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Be very nice to the people handling your financial aid and scholarship renewal forms. They can be your best friends or your worst enemies.
  • Beware of the campus preachers that stroll outside the Student Center. They have a nasty habit of preaching hellfire and brimstone at students as they walk by.
  • Don’t bring anything you truly value into the dorms. There is a good chance it will get lost, damaged, or stolen.
  • Have an idea of what floor you need to be going to when you get on an elevator at Patterson Office Tower and prepare to take the stairs between floors.
  • If you plan on joining a Greek organization, bring a chunk of change. It can cost more than $1,000 per semester to belong to such organizations.
  • If you think you are interested in study abroad, the sooner you start making plans and applying for assistance, the better your life will be.
  • Many students meet their future spouses at the University of Kentucky, and then end up sending their kids to UK, as well. There is quite a tradition at UK.
  • Plan on being surrounded by white suburban kids.
  • Plan on having your towel stolen from the showers at least once as a practical joke.
  • Plan on spending quite a bit of time waiting for basketball tickets. Take some books to read if you plan on going to a ticket lottery.
  • The community bathrooms in Donovan Hall have great acoustics and are wonderful for late-night guitar playing and singing.
  • The computer labs will inevitably crash during the week of finals. Don’t put a project off until the last minute, as it will more than likely be eaten by a computer.
  • Wear flip-flops in the shower. This piece of knowledge is invaluable.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t plan on ever having a good parking spot if you commute. Allow ample time to take buses from the K-Lot, and make friends with people who have better parking spaces than you.
  • Get involved in several things when you get to UK and then continue with the activity you enjoy the most. Suggestions are the radio station, newspaper, Bible studies, or intramural sports.
  • If you bring a laptop, install a wireless network card so you can surf the Internet while sitting under a tree outside.

The Scoop

Of course the basketball scene is a huge part of the school. Between entering drawings to win tickets to the game or seeing the players around campus, it is all exciting. 2011 State Street incidents (Project Lex) was a once in lifetime experience. The atmosphere of so many people on one street and things constantly being burned at any minute was worth having a front row seat. Although it may have gotten out of control at certain times, it was truly exciting.

Academic Advising.

One of the things that UK has to offer is a personal academic advisor that you meet with before scheduling classes every semester. They help you figure out what classes you should be taking so that you don't fall behind. They're also just an email or phone call away if you have other random questions at any point in the semester. It's been a really great tool that I've enjoyed.

Always Welcoming

With its Top 20 goal in mind, UK has pushed the boundary and is really expanding what the word University really means. With more hands on programs and a expanding honors program, this place is really hard to beat, especially at its price. Most colleges, like U of M are outrageously expensive but here you can get just as good if not better educations, from a school with a great reputation, for half the price.

Facts

Traditions
  • “They Fought Like Wildcats”: The official nickname for the University of Kentucky’s athletics teams is “Wildcats.” The nickname became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 football victory over Illinois on October 9, 1909, on the road. Commandant Carbusier, then head of the military department at old State University, told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team had “fought like Wildcats.” Later, the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers, as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the University.
  • Blue and White: The University of Kentucky adopted blue and white as its official colors in 1892. Originally, however, UK students had decided on blue and light yellow prior to the Kentucky-Centre College football game on December 19, 1891. The shade of blue, which is close to a royal blue, was chosen when a student asked the question, “What color blue?” At the time, Richard C. Stoll (who lettered in football at UK in 1889–94) pulled off his necktie and held it up. The students then adopted that particular shade of blue. A year later, UK students officially dropped the light yellow color for white.
  • Mascot: The Wildcat mascot originated during the 1976–77 academic year at UK. Gary Tanner was the original Wildcat, dancing and entertaining thousands of UK fans at Commonwealth Stadium and Rupp Arena during athletics events. Today, the Wildcat mascot also attends several academic functions, as well and generally serves as a friendly ambassador for the University.
  • My Old Kentucky Home: After home games, the song is performed by the pep band and sung by the cheerleaders and crowd. The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home, ‘Tis summer, the time to be gay; The corn-top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom, While the birds make music all the day. The young folks roll on the little cabin floor, All merry, all happy and bright; By’n by hard times come a-knocking at the door, Then my old Kentucky home, good night! (CHORUS) Weep no more my lady, Oh! Weep no more today! We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home, For my old Kentucky home, far away.
Urban Legends
  • If a virgin graduates from Kentucky, the statue of President Patterson by Patterson Office Tower will stand up and dance.
  • It is lucky to sit in President Patterson’s lap (the statue’s of course!) during finals week, unless the police are around. In that case, it could be very unlucky. Bonus points for having your picture taken.
Did You Know?
  • At hockey games when the Cool Cats score, the crowd chants, "Hey! You suck!" and a few other choice phrases at the visiting team. The UK hockey fans are notorious throughout the league for being rude, loud, and offensive. They are proud of it.
  • Ashley Judd wears a lucky UK T-shirt to every game she attends.
  • A large intra-state rivalry with the University of Louisville has led many Wildcat fans to dub it as the "University of Loserville."
  • There is not a color that offends a Wildcat fan more than Tennessee Orange.
