Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

After some time in the dorms, you will be more than ready for a bathroom and bedroom of your own. A seemingly endless supply of apartment complexes and old houses surround campus. Be prepared to spend quite a bit on housing the closer to campus that you get. You’ll pay more for a shorter walk.

Off-campus housing runs from about $250 to $350 on rent every month; some students find it necessary to get a job to pay for it all. The houses around campus were probably considered quite nice at some point in the 19th century, but after years of enduring house parties, some can feel more like tenaments than anything else. With Kentucky having a dry campus, the parties close to campus get a drenching in beer and sweat. The dry campus is nearly half the reason students tend to move off. If you’re not interested in that kind of lifestyle, off campus may not be for you, but if you are, Lexington offers a plethora of options available for all your off-campus needs.

Apartments Are Expensive and Ill Maintained

Most of the apartments I have been to off of campus are very expensive, even when the cost is split between three or four people. Additionally, the management for these apartments is frequently poor.

Apartments Are Fair for What You Get

In Lexington you can find an apartment in about any price range you are looking for. They have plenty and you will get what you pay for. Most of them are close to campus but if you want to be away from the campus life you can find some off campus as well. There are also plenty to go around.

Facts

Did You Know?
  • Many students live in clusters in certain apartment complexes. Depending upon location and time of year, certain areas of Lexington are nearly completely filled with UK students. The older houses around campus are popular living choices for students spending their first year off campus. After generations of wear and tear from UK students, these houses can be less than desirable.
  • Housing options at UK are changing rapidly with the addition of new dorms and new lofted apartments close to campus. Check frequently to get the most recent listings.
