They say that if you do not like the weather in Louisville, wait a day, because it will change. One day there could be gusts of icy wind and rain, and the next could be balmy and sunny. The weather changes constantly and the seasons are unpredictable here thanks to the Ohio River Valley, where Louisville is situated. Wintry weather may come without warning—it could switch on a dime from foggy mornings with warm afternoons to frigid, snowy weather. And snowstorms knock Louisville out—even though they happen every year, they don’t occur often enough for people to learn how to deal with them.
Besides a good collection of sweaters, the one thing students must have to survive a year on campus is rain boots. Whether you are dodging puddles from last night’s shower or trudging through snowdrifts, rain boots will keep your feet and jeans dry. And, while you’re wearing these boots, it also helps to think ahead to the soft warm spring when the trees explode with green and everyone is enjoying Frisbee on the waterfront lawn downtown. Louisville summers are unforgettably beautiful. They last well into the autumn months because for some reason, the seasons here are delayed. So, just remember that while summer may last into October, the weather may be wintry into April. But, somehow, the weather’s always nice in time for Derby in May.
