Mary Washington is far from being an athletically focused school, but that doesn't mean that the athletic department doesn't do well. There is no football team, and the sports aren’t very promoted, so most of the students do not attend the events or recognize them as something they should go to.
While the student body is overall impassive when it comes to school spirit and attending games, the sports themselves do well and are respected on campus. The women's swim team has won many CAC (Capital Athletic Conference) championships, along with the men's swim team. Many students tend to actively engage in club sports. A lot of athletes from high school find that club sports accommodate better to their schedules, as club sports are a lot more flexible and low-key than varsity sports. There will be many days when you will see students throwing a Frisbee on Ball Circle, or coming into class utterly muddy from rugby practice. The club sports are recognized to be both fun and challenging. In addition, there are great facilities for sporting events and exercise; the gym is brand-new and very well-equipped, with a pool and tennis court upstairs.
