Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Student athletes at Maryland are talented enough that even those who are not very passionate about sports will attend games to support them and to witness some awesome displays of competition. Football, basketball, lacrosse, and soccer seem to be the most popular, with many teams improving over the years. As a Division I school, varsity sports at Maryland are very popular. For students not too keen on statistics, let’s just say that when students say that the men’s squad is good, they are actually telling the truth. Games can come down to the wire and are very exciting to watch. IM and club sports are also pretty popular on campus, and thankfully, there are many of them.

UMCP sports are so “hot” that after some games, bonfires take place. Combined with possible chaos in the community, a rare riot may unexpectedly flare up. Sometimes, great games lead to not-so-great marches on campus that can turn ugly. Hot or not, Maryland sports bring out a primordial spirit within the campus and community. Go Terps!

Sports

Athletics are big at Maryland. Most popular sports are football and basketball. Many students go to those games and tickets for students are free. We have alot of fan support, you can alot of free things at the games (posters, shirts). School spirit is a very big thing at Maryland. The only negative thing is alot of other sports are overlooked.

Our School Spirit Is Awesome!

We have great school spirit, and it really unifies our student body. some of our teams are awesome, like women's basketball, field hockey, mens soccer, both lacrosse teams, etc. other teams may not win a lot but going to the games it still really popular, and really fun. but going to the games isnt requirement either. in addition to the official athletics, we have intramural and club sports which are fun to go to if you know someone on the teams, and almost anyone can get involved if they want to.

Sports Are a Huge Part of Maryland

Athletics are a great way to get involved in displaying your school spirit at Maryland. Our teams are pretty good in the ACC Division for men's basketball, and women's basketball have had a great season with minimal losses. Football games are a lot of fun and everyone gets pumped up for them-- even if our team isn't the best. We have many club sports that you can join, and even gymnastics and different dance groups and clubs. A unique program we have that any student can join is the University of Maryland Gymkana Troupe- a performance based gymnastics group who promotes healthy living by pledging to live healthy lives by staying drug & alcohol free. We also have a great recreation facility and gym, and it's a very green and healthy campus.

School Spirit

"Go Terps!" is the rallying cry for students and alumni alike at Maryland. School spirit isn't hard to find here. Maryland apparel is everywhere and never seems to go out of fashion. The people who go here harbor a deep love for the school, even if their own experience ends with a delay in credits or a monotonous social life. There's a big sense of pride wherever you go.

Getting Tickets

Maryland is one of the few D-I universities left that doesn't charge students for tickets to any of the sporting events. While the lottery process is a bit of a crapshoot, you can build up points each season by attending more games. Football is definitely the most popular sport to attend. When the weather's nice and students can spend all day tailgating, the sea of red is a sight to behold.

Best Place to Take a Walk

South Campus is gorgeous and lined with trees, making it perfectly picturesque in the fall and spring.

Did You Know? The most popular tailgate parties are in Lot 11 next to the View.
