Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Yet another reason students flock to Maryland is for the diversity of the student population. Maryland has a sizable population of international and minority students, and an array of students with different religious, political, and gender preferences, as well as learning and physical disabilities. Aside from an occasional ignorant hate crime, there is a high level of tolerance on campus for people of different religious, cultural, and sexual backgrounds. Although there is a perceived lack of integration between diverse student groups, UMCP’s successful attempts at celebrating diversity shine through in the classroom. It is truly a melting pot of gold here.

While students from New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut may appear to be a majority, only a relatively small number of the student population is from the NYC metro area. Students from all over the United States and the world join Maryland’s campus to take advantage of such a dynamic and diverse learning environment, and many students come to appreciate the opportunity to meet and spend time with people from different cultural backgrounds.

Facts

Gay Pride

The University is extremely open and supportive of students who practice non-traditional sexual preferences. UMD recently introduced an LGBT major/minor, and one of the most popular events on campus is the "Pride Prom," which is hosted every year by the Pride Alliance. The liberal movement on campus means students are not afraid to rally to show their support for causes like gay marriage, equal partner benefits, and gender equality.

Political Activity

One of Maryland's greatest strengths is its hot bed of political activity. The Op-Ed columns in the school newspaper are constantly rallying for change and reform, and students aren't afraid to express their political views, even if they are not with the liberal majority. Students on this campus have a voice, and being close to the nation's capital makes them even more apt to use it.

Economic Status

People from all over attend UMCP, and although out-of-staters do pick up the bulk of the tuition check, there is about zero class discrimination on campus.

Most Common Religions

Judaism and Christianity are the most prevalent religions on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are nearly 600 campus groups at UMCP and a good number of them are successful, fun organizations created and maintained by minorities at Maryland.

Did You Know? Many political figures have come to Maryland, most notably Barack Obama during his presidential campaign.
