With a big school like UMCP, there is usually a perception of a big drug scene. However, there is only a relatively small amount of traditional drugs being abused on campus. Marijuana and alcohol continue to be popular, given that they are both readily available. Hardcore drugs such as cocaine can probably be found or requested, but rarely do students mix with such "hard" drugs.
In residence halls, alcohol is more often heard than seen (“clink, clink”), and marijuana is more often smelled. Students smoking pot in residence halls are in for a challenge. Resident assistants have been trained to know the difference between cigar smoke and marijuana, and the police may be called to assist in a situation. However, students agree that the drug scene at Maryland is probably similar to most other college campuses—it’s not too hard to avoid.

Drinking
University of Maryland is known as a party school, so people tend to drink when they are in the social scene.

I'm Clean
At UMD, you're bound to smell something depending on where you are. No one forces you to take drugs.
