Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is a perception by many students on Maryland’s campus that the Greek community is overbearing, but in reality, not a huge percentage of students actually “go Greek.” The perceived dominance of fraternities and sororities on campus may simply be based on effective and assertive marketing techniques, which tend to include promotions via word of mouth, relationship-building, and basic Greek pride. Furthermore, a majority of the town bar patrons may in fact be Greek students simply because many of them like to socialize there, and College Park only has a few bars. More than ever, Greek students could be invading the bars more frequently because of the University's restrictions on parties on Fraternity Row and beyond.

Having the opportunity to experience “rush” on campus is special to some Terps, as it provides an easy way to quickly get involved and immersed in Maryland life. Greek life offers a way to experience diversity, friendship, leadership, scholarship, and service without having to reinvent the wheel. Buckle up, though—going Greek requires a commitment, and you can’t become president of a fraternity overnight.

Greek Life

Greek fraternities as well as sororities usually organize interesting events for the rest of us on special days of the year. They include performances, outdoor comedians, as well as invitations to parties every now and then. There is no definitive exclusion of outsiders who are not part of any Greek life. When I am in Greek parties, everyone is just there for a good time and no one cares if someone is in a frat or not.

Part of Campus Life, but Don't Dominate

Greek life is certainly prevalent on campus and available, but that doesn't mean you're pressured into joining. It's not a big deal if you're not in a frat or sorority.

Very Present, but Not Overbearing.

Its very common to see people rocking their letters around campus. It seems like at least a quarter of the student body are involved or at least consider it. There are a lot of frats and sororities that do so many different things you would really have to do your research. Greeks definitely fit in with everyone else on campus.

Housing is available on Frat Row for some but definitely not all frats/sororities. A lot of parties take place there but are usually shut down by PG Police.
