Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While UMCP has become more research-oriented and productivity-focused, the campus continues to be well known for having a good deal of fit, attractive students with “physical talent” who know how to manage themselves well. The campus’s emphasis on athletics and its state-of-the-art recreation facility motivate many students to keep in shape, especially during College Park’s colder months. Come spring, when Eppley Recreation Center's outdoor pool opens on North Campus, you’ll find already-fit guys and girls getting sun, flirting, and showing off their bodies. UMCP is a pretty trendy campus, as many students display the latest fashions and styles from all of the “in” stores.

At UMCP, it’s generally accepted that there are more hot girls than guys—but not by an astronomical margin. Here are some generalized statistics: 10 percent of students are hot, another 10 percent of students are inspirational-looking and therefore motivate other students to hit the gym, 20 percent are good looking, 40 percent are average looking, and 20 percent could use a complete makeover. Perception is based on preference, and UMCP’s diversity means that there’s someone for everybody, whether they meet in a computer lab, in Hornbake Library, or at a sporting event.

Have Never Seen So Many Dorks Before

I haven't seen too many attractive people, but as far as interests go, the school population has a great variety of interests.

So Many People, Hard to Get to Know Someone

There's definitely a variety of people on campus. The only problem is actually getting to know someone. Our undergraduate class is about 37,000 students and classes are huge. Therefore, the party atmosphere is heavily relied upon for dating and hookups.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The University has someone for everyone, and then some. Most of the students are friendly and outgoing enough to strike up friendships with in class or at a club meeting, and Facebook doesn't hurt, either. There's a lot of diversity on campus, and you have to go out of your way to homogenize your group of on-campus friends.

Hookups or Relationships?

Hookups are the dating preference, though relationships have been known to stem from a steady month or two of hooking up with the same person. Flings, one-night stands, and long-distance relationships are all in full bloom on campus, but the one thing that makes UMCP stand out is the fact that dating actually occurs on campus (e.g., dating: the old-time tradition of two people going somewhere, doing something together, and then maybe repeating the venture again in the future if all is a success). There's never a shortage of people to meet, and the casualness of these relationships allows for schoolwork to get done without a hitch in the middle of the week, leaving a weekend open for sex and maybe even romance.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

You'll meet people everywhere—in class, at work, at a bar, on the campus shuttle. People aren't afraid to strike up a conversation with strangers when the movie theater isn't open on time or when they're waiting to get into the gym. Friendliness leads to flirtation, and flirtation can lead to a phone number, which might lead to an invitation out later that night.

Dress Code

If you're a girl, you will own a pair of UGGs before you graduate from UMD. There's a uniform among most females that consists of black leggings, UGGs of various colors, a white men's T-shirt, and an oversized sweatshirt with hair thrown up in a bun. For guys, jeans and sweatshirts seem to be commonplace in the classroom. A night on the town makes for a unique dress code for girls; generally, the younger they are, the less clothing they have on. Juniors and seniors have recognized that goosebumps do not make for fashion-forward accessories, but freshmen and sophomores have to reach a tipping point, generally in mid-February, to get there. H&M, Gap, J. Crew, and Forever 21 make up most of the closets on campus.
