Social Scene
The University has someone for everyone, and then some. Most of the students are friendly and outgoing enough to strike up friendships with in class or at a club meeting, and Facebook doesn't hurt, either. There's a lot of diversity on campus, and you have to go out of your way to homogenize your group of on-campus friends.
Hookups or Relationships?
Hookups are the dating preference, though relationships have been known to stem from a steady month or two of hooking up with the same person. Flings, one-night stands, and long-distance relationships are all in full bloom on campus, but the one thing that makes UMCP stand out is the fact that dating actually occurs on campus (e.g., dating: the old-time tradition of two people going somewhere, doing something together, and then maybe repeating the venture again in the future if all is a success). There's never a shortage of people to meet, and the casualness of these relationships allows for schoolwork to get done without a hitch in the middle of the week, leaving a weekend open for sex and maybe even romance.
Dress Code
If you're a girl, you will own a pair of UGGs before you graduate from UMD. There's a uniform among most females that consists of black leggings, UGGs of various colors, a white men's T-shirt, and an oversized sweatshirt with hair thrown up in a bun. For guys, jeans and sweatshirts seem to be commonplace in the classroom. A night on the town makes for a unique dress code for girls; generally, the younger they are, the less clothing they have on. Juniors and seniors have recognized that goosebumps do not make for fashion-forward accessories, but freshmen and sophomores have to reach a tipping point, generally in mid-February, to get there. H&M, Gap, J. Crew, and Forever 21 make up most of the closets on campus.
