Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The actual cost of parking on campus is steeper than that of other colleges. In addition to the cost, there is not much parking available for everyone. If it weren’t for a lack of spots, third- and fourth-year student drivers would have a pretty sweet deal. Unfortunately, it can often feel like a terrible dream attempting to find a highly coveted parking spot while running late for an exam or a meeting with classmates. As it is at many large universities throughout America, finding a parking space at UMCP becomes a big deal to many students.

Campus officials have done a pretty good job of attempting to limit the number of parking permits distributed each year, although they are building more parking structures and spaces. Yet, as many Maryland students may learn in their economics courses, scarcity really is a real world issue, especially when it comes to the Department of Transportation Services’ policies and budgets. DOTS can be strict with the parking situation and will issue tickets for expired meters and illegal parking without permits.

It Is Ok

College Park has a lot of students. There is parking to accomidate all of us, but sometimes it is quite a hike to class when you don't get a good spot.

Could Be Better

The University of Maryland is a large campus so parking is limited, resident students have to pay much more just to keep a car on campus. The ticketing and fines are ridiculous, the department of transpo. is very strict about enforcement, and fighting a ticket is a lengthy process and you'll most likely lose. Even if you think you're safe for an hour or even 30 min. they'll get you. Parking isn't horrible but you have to get there early or you'll have to park far away or on the higher levels.

Parking at UMD

Parking at UMD in respect to availability is pretty good. The bad part about parking is that there are rarely any free parking spots. Every parking spot requires a permit and the university makes a lot of money off of ticketing cars. Permits cost TOO MUCH!!! There is not really a need for a car if you live on campus. The campus is big but not big enough that you must drive.

Getting a Parking Permit

The school is currently on a "green" initiative to get more on-campus students to stop using their own vehicles as a way to get around and start using public transportation, but juniors and seniors almost always have a car with them on campus. However, a lot of the spaces were taken away, so the number of permits available is slowly dropping, which may have a future impact on freshmen who choose to bring their cars to school.
