College Park is a pretty satisfying, happy medium for students who love changing seasons. UMCP experiences moderate winters, including occasional snowstorms, so be prepared. Every year or so, a storm comes and shuts down campus for about a day or two. Students engage in snowball fights and sledding. The area’s autumn temperatures are beautiful and often comfortable, but students should come prepared with a few sweaters. Most rainfall comes during the spring, so umbrellas and jackets are a must. When it comes to the summer, if you don’t like humidity, get out of town, as temperatures can be really hot in June and July. During the summer months, temperatures can rise as high as 100 degrees, and the weather can be very humid. Many students will throw Frisbees on the Mall or play beach volleyball at La Plata Beach. The Eppley Recreation Center (ERC) also has an outdoor swimming pool for students to take a refreshing swim and cool off.

During the cold months, temperatures can dip down to 20 degrees, and students can experience a range of weather from sleet and freezing rain to snow. For students who would rather crawl into their Terrapin shells than face the blistering cold, the ERC offers a warm environment to swim and exercise, while the dining hall provides hot meals and a variety of hot drinks such as hot chocolate and lattes. However, there are many students who scoff at the cold and walk around campus in shorts and T-shirts. While College Park winters are nothing like San Diego winters, they’re nothing like NYC winters, either.
