College Prowler Take

Student athletes at Maryland are so talented that even those who are not very passionate about sports will attend games to support them and to witness some awesome displays of competition. Football, basketball, lacrosse, and soccer seem to be the most popular, with many teams improving over the years. As a Division I school, varsity sports at Maryland are very popular. For students not too keen on statistics, let’s just say that when students say that the men’s squad is the best, they are actually telling the truth. IM and club sports are also pretty popular on campus, and thankfully, there are many of them.

UMCP sports are so “hot” that after some games, bonfires occur. Combined with possible chaos in the community, a rare riot may unexpectedly flare up. While it’s not a tradition but a surprising reoccurrence, great games may lead to not-so-great marches on the campus that could turn ugly. Hot or not, Maryland sports bring out a primordial spirit within the campus and community. Go Terps!

Varsity sports were huge—it’s a D-I, ACC school with a lot of spirit behind basketball and football.

It’s huge—that’s what’s fun. I think IMs are pretty big, too. I played flag football. If you want to, you can get involved. There’s plenty of club sports. My roommate played club baseball.

Football: years ago we were horrible, and yet we all still tailgated and went to the game. Go figure! Basketball is very big. As students, half the event was sleeping outside for tickets because they would actually run out! We’d bring sleeping bags, portable TVs and radios, and make a mini-party in line.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Cole Fieldhouse - The original on-campus gym at UMCP now has indoor turf for soccer leagues and a cycling studio for the heavily-populated spinning classes. A few times a week you might even spot the Nordic Walking classes working up a sweat as they make laps around the facility.
  • Eppley Recreation Center - Known for being one of the nicest college gyms in the country, this is one place students fail to be disappointed. There's a plethora of cardio machines, a weight room that spans two floors, racquetball courts, a world-class natatorium, and a smoothie bar. The Outdoor Aquatic Center is the most popular spot to be on campus in the spring and fall, when the weather's still warm enough to build a good tan.
  • Reckford Armory - Between the Mitchell and Lee Building, the Armory isn't quite as popular as it used to be, though a flurry of sports clubs are in and out of the Intramural Sports Office and the basketball gymnasium on a regular basis.
  • Ritchie Coliseum - This is the go-to place for a Greek-oriented workout because of its proximity to South Campus and Fraternity Row. You'll find sorority shirts abound on the elliptical machines, while fraternity "brahs" stake out spots in the weight room.
  • SPH Building - The School of Public Health Building is next to the ERC, and in addition to housing basketball and volleyball courts, it has smaller weight rooms and cardio facilities for faculty and staff use, so you'll almost never run into your professors working up a sweat.

Getting Tickets

Maryland is one of the few D-I universities left that doesn't charge students for tickets to any of the sporting games. While the lottery process is a bit of a crapshoot, you can build up points each season by attending more games. Football is definitely the most popular sport to attend. When the weather's nice and students can spend all day tailgating, the sea of red is a sight to behold.
