College Prowler Take
Campus strictness at Maryland is based on the rule of its enforcers and on the judicial committees. Students can encounter police officers and Resident Life officials that are either lenient, stringent, or moderate on following procedures. Sometimes it’s all in the timing, what a student is doing, and how much evidence is found. For example, at tailgate parties in parking lots across campus prior to or after a sports event, patrolling police officers may not attempt to investigate whether good-natured, young attendees holding bottles of beer are of legal age. Yet, ask a random student who was caught on Maryland’s campus while doing something wrong, and they’ll tell you that the campus police are sticklers. Resident Assistants are a different breed. Thanks to formal training sessions throughout the school year, RAs are educated on confronting and preventing escalating conflict both inside and outside of residence halls, as well as ultimately every location on the Maryland campus. And most RAs do, in fact, implement their training background to take action if they “see it, hear it, or smell it.” Few Resident Assistants seek out trouble—and the opportunity to fill out paperwork and attend judicial hearings—but when trouble is in the air, RAs can sense it and will call for back up in a heartbeat. Also, if drugs are involved, that usually means that the police get involved, too.

You’d guess a guy like me would never get arrested. You guessed right. I did come pretty close to it though. Where? The top of Byrd Stadium. When? Some night around my junior year. Why? Cops were on a stakeout for a few students that had been throwing objects over the top of the stadium at moving vehicles, people, and the street in front of Ellicott Hall. What was I doing on top of the stadium? Well, I was throwing what I then thought was just about the smoothest mack-down on a pretty little girl who will remain nameless, to prevent any further embarrassment. Oh, did I tell you I had my saxophone up there? Yeah, that was ‘sealing the deal’ with my young lady friend. Except for the fact that the University Police, after searching me, asked me to open the case very slowly and to step back, as if I had a small arsenal of dangerous and illegal objects. The cops were also on stakeout for
people smoking pot, which prompted a body search. |

Unless you spill your beer on an officer they will not bother you. Parties do get busted occasionally, but it's only for noise violations and seems to be more so the cops can say they do something. There is a no tolerance policy for weed. The SWAT team came into a building last semester and arrested a dealer who will most likely not be enrolled again for a while. RAs are either really cool or complete jerks who let the power go to their heads. Most are regular people who remember their freshman year and understand the urge to get drunk. There is always one in every building who takes his/her job too seriously and patrols the halls listening at doors. The trick is to know all the RAs (especially yours) and double check who is on duty each night you're planning shenanigans.

Many of the RAs in the dorms don't care that you drink, but you have to be smart about it. Don't make it so obvious that they have no choice but to bust you!
