College Prowler Take

Not surprisingly, computers and the Internet are big at Maryland, like at most schools. There are more than 700 computers in 40 computer labs throughout  campus, but that’s not enough for the campus’s media-driven students. “Always be connected” is a lifestyle that many Terps stick with, primarily because of the convenience and the productivity that comes with having a computer either back in their room or by their side in laptop cases. The labs on campus offer students the opportunity to briefly check e-mail, send a few Instant Messages, or do some surfing using Google. While there may be good opportunities to spend more than an hour typing a research paper or IMing one’s sweetie in a computer lab, most students suggest having a computer in the comfort of your own room for maximum pleasure and results. The best original papers submitted at Maryland are often those worked on in environments where there isn’t a line of Internet-addicted students waiting to check their e-mail.

If it’s affordable, get your own computer. Furthermore, get a laptop if you can, as, for many students, it’s more efficient to take notes on a laptop in some classes by transcribing information directly into a computer. Using IM in moderation is possible for a few strong-willed students, but frankly, at UMCP, everyone is doing it, and doing it a lot.

Yeah, you should bring your own computer. It’s a must! Computer labs aren’t that bad at night. Daytime? Packed. Not only that, but it’s a pain to walk to them late at night when you need to check something or write a paper.

The labs are not too crowded and always open. Bring your own laptop, though.

I’d bring my own computer. Who wants to schlep all the way to the labs? I found it helpful when writing a paper at 3 a.m. to have my own to sit with in the dorm hallways and study lounges. Then again, I’m a procrastinator, so if you plan well, you don’t have to work outside your room at 3 a.m.

There is an excellent computer network with several computer rooms. I was always able to find a workstation. It’s always a good idea to have your own PC, though.

I didn’t have my own computer until the end of my junior year. So bring one if you really need to type a lot, but otherwise, there is not a need.
