College Prowler Take
Not surprisingly, computers and the Internet are big at Maryland, like at most schools. There are more than 700 computers in 40 computer labs throughout campus, but that’s not enough for the campus’s media-driven students. “Always be connected” is a lifestyle that many Terps stick with, primarily because of the convenience and the productivity that comes with having a computer either back in their room or by their side in laptop cases. The labs on campus offer students the opportunity to briefly check e-mail, send a few Instant Messages, or do some surfing using Google. While there may be good opportunities to spend more than an hour typing a research paper or IMing one’s sweetie in a computer lab, most students suggest having a computer in the comfort of your own room for maximum pleasure and results. The best original papers submitted at Maryland are often those worked on in environments where there isn’t a line of Internet-addicted students waiting to check their e-mail. If it’s affordable, get your own computer. Furthermore, get a laptop if you can, as, for many students, it’s more efficient to take notes on a laptop in some classes by transcribing information directly into a computer. Using IM in moderation is possible for a few strong-willed students, but frankly, at UMCP, everyone is doing it, and doing it a lot.

Yeah, you should bring your own computer. It’s a must! Computer labs aren’t that bad at night. Daytime? Packed. Not only that, but it’s a pain to walk to them late at night when you need to check something or write a paper. |

The labs are not too crowded and always open. Bring your own laptop, though. |

B+
There are many libraries and computer labs available. You only really need a laptop if you prefer taking notes on it during class. There are printers available as well as wireless almost everywhere at good speeds.

Network is reliable
B+
Ninety-nine percent of the student body has their own computer, and I can see why. There are computer labs around campus and in the library, but they are limited for the 25,000 ungrads and the 10,000 graduate students here. One night the wireless network went down, and no one was on campus to fix it, so that was really frustrating. Overall, though, the network is reliable, and you can get Internet access pretty much anywhere on campus. You do have to pay for printing, but I think that's pretty normal for a college campus.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, graduated from Maryland in 1993. Ten years later, he donated an individual UM version of the search engine to campus for two years, which is worth about $28,000.
