Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Yet another reason students flock to Maryland is for the diversity of the student population. Maryland has a sizable population of international and minority students, and an array of students with different religious, political, and gender preferences, as well as learning and physical disabilities. Aside from an occasional ignorant hate crime, there’s a high level of tolerance for people of different religious, cultural, and sexual backgrounds. Although there is a perceived lack of integration between diverse student groups, UMCP’s successful attempts at celebrating diversity shine through in the classroom. It’s truly a melting pot of gold here. While students from New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut may appear to be a majority, only a relatively small number of the student population is from the NYC metro area. Students from all over the United States and the world join Maryland’s campus to take advantage of such a dynamic and diverse learning environment, and many students come to appreciate the opportunity to meet and spend time with people from different cultural backgrounds.

Maryland has one of the most diverse campuses in the nation. You can find any kind of background here, whether you are speaking about ethnicity or religion. Additionally, the campus is definitely more liberal and is very accepting to gays and lesbians.

Maryland prides itself on...
Maryland prides itself on diversity. Minorities make up a large percentage of the student population. In my freshman hall, I roomed with two Latina girls, lived across the hall from an orthodox Jew who roomed with a first-generation Asian-American, and next door were two inner-city girls from Baltimore. I had a blast learning about their cultures, ideas, beliefs—everything! I even got to go home with them every so often and witness their cultures first-hand. My classmates are from all different parts of the country and world. Coming from a suburban all-white private school in the Midwest, it was quite the culture shock for me, but I have loved every moment.

The campus is a microcosm of the world. I met people from every race and religion I could think of. It’s actually the first place I’ve ever felt comfortable and accepted being Jewish. |

It’s diverse, but segregated. You’ll see a lot of people sticking with people like themselves; there is not a lot of intermixing. |

FactsEconomic Status
People from all over attend UMCP, and although out-of-staters do pick up the bulk of the tuition check, there's about zero class discrimination on campus.
Gay Pride
The University is extremely open and supportive of students who practice non-traditional sexual preferences. UMD recently introduced an LGBT major/minor, and one of the most popular events on campus is the "Pride Prom," which is hosted every year by the Pride Alliance. The liberal movement on campus means students aren't afraid to rally to show their support for causes like gay marriage, equal partner benefits, and gender equality.
Minority Clubs
If you didn’t already notice, there are nearly 600 campus groups at UMCP and a good number of them are successful, fun organizations created and maintained by minorities at Maryland.
Most Common Religions
Judaism and Christianity are the most prevalent religions on campus.
Political Activity
One of Maryland's greatest strengths is that it's a hot bed of political activity. The Op-Ed columns in the school newspaper are constantly rallying for change and reform, and students aren't afraid to express their political views, even if they're not with the liberal majority. Students on this campus have a voice, and being thisclose to the nation's capital makes them even more apt to use it.
