College Prowler Take
There is a perception of a big drug scene, but there is a relatively small amount of traditional drugs being abused on campus. Marijuana and alcohol continue to be popular given that they are both readily available, and some hardcore drugs can also be found and sometimes even requested. Surprisingly, despite some students making drug use one of their top priorities while at UMCP, they do excel in their courses, all while honoring the “Code of Academic Integrity.” In residence halls, alcohol is more often heard than seen (“clink, clink”), but marijuana is more often smelled. Any students smoking pot in residence halls are in for a challenge. For years, Resident Assistants have been trained to know the difference between the odor incense emits and the stuff that many parents’ nightmares are made of: Mary Jane. Students agree that the drug scene at Maryland is probably similar to most other college campuses and say that it’s not too hard to avoid.

Groups like NORML and SSDP are pretty big on campus, and there is definitely weed all over the place. Other than that, I know a few people do 'shrooms or harder stuff, but its not too big. It's mostly weed and booze here.

A lot of people smoke pot, but I haven't seen too much of anything harder. Smoking pot is probably almost as popular as drinking.

I would say the drug scene at UMD is pretty standard. Some people do lots of drugs, some people don't do any drugs, and some do drugs every now and again. Most common is smoking pot—besides alcohol, of course.

It's not a real part of the social scene. I don't do drugs, but I have plenty of friends who do. People who use them usually just do pot in small groups. Maybe someone will bring some rec drugs to a party, but they will be for a predetermined group. It's easy to stay in or out and really makes no difference depending on what you're into.

There’s a good amount of drug use, but no more than other campuses. Kids are still pulling high GPAs. |
