College Prowler Take
There is a perception by many students on Maryland’s campus that the Greek community is overbearing, but in reality, not a huge percentage of students actually “go Greek.” The perceived dominance of fraternities and sororities on campus may simply be based on effective and assertive marketing techniques, which tend to include promotions via word of mouth, relationship-building, and basic Greek pride. Furthermore, a majority of the town bar patrons may in fact be Greek students simply because many of them like to socialize there, and College Park only has a few bars. More than ever, Greek students could be invading the bars more frequently because of the campus’s new restrictions on parties on Fraternity Row and beyond. Having the opportunity to experience “rush” on the campus is special to some Terps as it provides an easy way to quickly get involved and immersed in Maryland life. Greek life offers a way to experience diversity, friendship, leadership, scholarship, and service without having to reinvent the wheel. Buckle up, though—going Greek requires a commitment, and you can’t become president of a fraternity overnight.

Not being Greek, I felt a slight...
Not being Greek, I felt a slight pressure most of my college experience to become a part of the Greek system, and I think that is why a lot of students join—because they don’t know how else to get involved on campus. And while the Greek system is a great fit for some people, it isn’t the only thing to get involved with on campus. It might take a little more effort to go to a meeting of a club or organization that you’re interested in, but it’s well worth it. Not being Greek, I still went to lots of parties and had my share of typical college experiences. You just have to know where to look. Don’t feel like you have to join the Greek system to fit in and have fun! |

Somewhat Annoying

I am not in Greek life because I feel as if especially for guys, it is only a way to buy some friends or a really easy way to meet people. Greek life at Maryland is very strong and a lot of people are into frats and sororities but you def dont need to be in one if you dont want to--none of my friends are. With a campus this big you'll find a little bit of everything.

Many Are Active in Greek Life, but Not Necessity
A
As you walk around campus, you will see lots of people wearing Greek letters - whether that includes social fraternities/sororities or professional ones. However, there does not seem to be any necessity to join Greek Life - there is no ostracism for not belonging. As for judgment of Greeks by non-Greeks it seems to depends on which particular sorority/fraternity you belong to - some definitely have negative reputations while others are known are nice and down-to-earth.

It All Depends..
B+
Currently I am not part of Greek life, but I plan on rushing next semester. There is definitely a large Greek presence on campus, but it doesn't dominate. Only 10% of undergrads here are part of greek life, leaving a good 90% of people who have chosen a different path. Personally, I want a way to get involved and build a community easily, so joining a sorority seems the right thing for me to do. There are many perks as well- once you join. But, if you do not choose to join a sorority, there are so many other ways to get involved and build a community of your own. And during rush season, frat parties are open to everyone!
