Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The actual cost of parking on campus is steeper than that of other colleges. In addition to the cost, there is not much parking available for everyone. If it weren’t for a lack of spots, third- and fourth-year student drivers would have a pretty sweet deal. Unfortunately, it can often feel like a terrible dream attempting to find a highly coveted parking spot while running late for an exam or a meeting with classmates. As it is at many large universities throughout America, finding a parking space at UMCP becomes a big deal to many students.

Campus officials have done a pretty good job of attempting to limit the number of parking permits distributed each year, although they are building more parking structures and spaces. Yet, as many Maryland students may learn in their economics courses, scarcity really is a real world issue, especially when it comes to the Department of Transportation Services’ policies and budgets. DOTS can be strict with the parking situation and will issue tickets for expired meters and illegal parking without permits.

Just Take a Bus

The parking is awful. First off, it's a couple hundred bucks for a permit and your designated lot depends on what year you are in school. Most upperclassmen get the closer spots but it doesn't really matter because your going to be stuck with a half hour (1 mile) walk. Oh, and even though you paid for your permit, you still will get emails from the campus throughout the week telling you that you can't park in the lot because of a sporting event. But beware, if you park anywhere else on campus for 5 minutes, you WILL get a ticket for $75. They tow your car too almost immediately and you eat the cost of $100 for that.

Ticketing and Fines

I'm terrified of bringing a car to school for the sole issue of parking. I do not know a single person who parks there car on campus who doesn't have at least one parking ticket. Aside from the fines, parking is often incredibly inconvenient and you wind up having to walk over a mile to your desired destination anyway. In my opinion, it's not even worth having a car unless you're commuting.

Getting a Parking Permit

The school is currently on a "green" initiative to get more on-campus students to stop using their own vehicles as a way to get around and start using public transportation, but juniors and seniors almost always have a car with them on campus. However, a lot of the spaces were taken away, so the number of permits available is slowly dropping, which may have a future impact on freshmen who choose to bring their cars to school.
