College Prowler Take
Most students can’t complain about the transportation on and around the campus. Along with the UM Shuttle service, Maryland has its own Metro station that offers train rides to a handful of locations throughout the Washington, DC and Maryland area, giving students quick solutions to their transportation needs. Thanks to these two significant aspects of Maryland’s public transportation services, happiness comes easy to students who don’t own a car, don’t have a car on the campus, or simply don’t want to face the hassles of driving all of the time while attending school. The impossible task of finding a parking spot around here is offset by convenient alternatives. The UM Shuttle runs practically 24/7 during the spring and fall semesters, and if you have the patience, take a ride on a few of their routes to get a feel for the area. The Metro is so delightful that it’s rated as one of the best in the country. Its stations have eye-pleasing architecture and are quiet and clean, and the trains take you where you want to go, even until 3 a.m. on weekends—who’s going to complain about that?

Everyone uses the DC metro! It's cheap, fast, and convenient any time you want to go into the city. No one ever really wants to get around College Park outside of the campus itself, which has good on-campus buses.

UM Shuttle is great. They run mostly on time, and most of the time, the drivers are students who understand that you have a place to be. The College Park and Greenbelt Metro stations are just a few minutes from campus and buses run to both. You can get into DC in 20 minutes—we're only seven miles away.

Public transportation is...
Public transportation is convenient. The main bus stop on campus can take you to one of three Metro stations, which all lead to Washington DC. The campus routes are convenient, as well, except for the fact that they don't run until 5 p.m., meaning you have to walk to most of your classes. But, you get used to it—most kids don't even find it necessary to get a bike.

The transportation around the University of Maryland is semi-convenient. The buses are very popular among students and really come in handy on such a big campus. However, I only use the bus to go distances of more than a mile because the buses don't run as often as I would like.

Need a ride? Shuttle UM can probably get you there in a somewhat timely fashion. With more than 10 routes running seven days a week, including four that run until 3 a.m., there's no reason to traipse around campus by foot. The Department of Transportation also includes NITE Ride, which works as a free, safe taxi for students who find themselves off-campus and need a ride somewhere off a bus route.
