Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Surprisingly, varsity sports on campus are not very big, especially when compared to universities of similar size, like UConn or some Boston schools. Hockey is the most highly attended sports and you'll want to get in line early to get a good seat, especially when UMass plays top schools like BC. Still, you’ll never have a problem finding a seat at a football or basketball game. On the plus side, all tickets for sporting events are free for students. Also, intramural sports are big and a great distraction from homework.

The athletic facilities on campus are decent, but nothing to write home about. If you play a varsity sport, you’ll have access to very nice gyms with much newer equipment. The Mullins Center is a beautiful arena, and the surrounding athletic fields, which include all of the intramural fields, are also in good shape. Overall, when it comes to sports at UMass, it is accurate to say that the Boston Red Sox are more popular here than the Minutemen. The University has a large Boston influence, and most of the enthusiasm displayed by students gets directed toward that city’s professional teams.

School Spirit

Attending sporting events and showing one's school spirit at UMASS Amherst is a pretty huge part of the college experience. No matter what the sport, if one has even seen the sport played or not, I personally believe that we have the greatest school spirit.

Great Fun and True Fans

There is a a lot of emphasis put on game days and every sport has it's own unique experience. The venues are great and right on campus. There are super fans and there are people who just love to attend every game. No matter what your favorite sport every game is exciting and fun. A great sense of community is felt when attending the games with your peers.

I enjoy playing intermurials for multiple sports. It is low key and gives the guys on my floor something to come together for.

School Spirit

The school spirit at UMass is not what it used to be, partially because the athletic department has been downsized over the last couple years. However, certain sporting events are still a big draw at UMass, like Midnight Madness and the Homecoming football game.

Getting Tickets

All regular season sporting events are free for students—just show up with your student ID.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The best places to take a walk are around the campus pond, the bike path, or the center of town.

Did You Know? UMass also has a Quidditch team (yes, based on the sport from the Harry Potter books).
