Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It is far more common for students at UMass to use alcohol on the weekends than drugs, but marijuana takes a close second. Other drugs that could be considered "popular" here are prescription drugs, like Adderall, and ecstasy, but users of hard drugs tend to stay under the radar about their behavior. Due to the huge population at UMass, it is possible to find any type of drug you could ever want, but drugs are also completely avoidable. You may be asked if you want to drink or smoke weed (most likely for the sake of politeness), but don't worry about being pressured to use hard drugs unless you seek them out.

Central Residential Area has the most noticeable drug culture on campus, but Southwest is not far behind. However, the UMPD and Amherst Police Department do their jobs well and deter people from doing drugs. For example, a large drug bust was made in Southwest one semester, and police confiscated large quantities of drugs and money. Sure enough, the front page of the next day’s Daily Collegian was completely devoted to this story. Tactics like this are just one of the ways police remind students that drugs will not be tolerated on campus.

Plentiful

A lot of people smoke weed and drink, but it can be avoided if you befriend the right people. No one pressures you into it unless you hang out with a bunch of people who do it, and there have been plenty of police raids. It typically happens in Southwest though, or at frats.

No one will really approach you about doing drugs. But if one really wanted to do drugs they could find some people who do something.
