Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

To a new student, the sheer number and range of facilities at UMass is impressive and a little intimidating. The general feeling is that UMass facilities are well maintained and offer everything a student needs and most of what they want. Some buildings could use a facelift, but the University has been slowing updating campus where needed. The library is 26 stories and offers everything a student could ever need. Despite numerous campus legends about the library being built incorrectly (it’s said that the architect didn’t take into account the weight of the books when designing the building, so now it’s sinking), it is an extremely popular place to study. Need some peace and quiet? Take the speedy elevator to an upper level. Doing a group project? Head downstairs to the newly expanded Learning Commons. If you get tired, grab a coffee on the ground level where you can also check out your books.

The University's most recent improvement is the new Recreation Center. Students previously had to work out and play indoor sports at either of the two old gymnasiums or buy a membership to the smaller gyms inside four dorms. Now, they can head to the Rec Center, which boasts three levels and 120,000 square feet of anything anyone could ever want out of a gym, plus a juice bar courtesy of the Class of 2009. The pulse of UMass is at the Campus Center, where vendors and student organizations compete for attention. This complex, which connects to the Student Union by means of a long, heavily-traversed tunnel, accommodates everything from cafeterias to the University store. If you’re looking for something to do on campus, the Campus Center has it all.

Campus Facilities

Buildings are all pretty crappy because they're so old..(not including the new gym or Mullens Center) but the campus as a whole is HUGE, and actually very very beautiful! The gym is the newest addition and its like 5 floors of awesomeness!

Awesome Facilities

At UMASS we have really fantastic facilities. We have a few different gyms, but the main gym is amazing. It's three floors, extremely nice equipment, and is set up fantastically. There's also a gym with a pool, a plethora of sports facilities and fields, two separate libraries (one with over 30 floors and the other smaller but more science focuses), a crazy amount of places to eat, and tons of labs and places to use computers. And on top of it, all these places are pretty great to look at, our campus is beautiful.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

UMass Amherst is doing a lot to make its campus environmentally friendly. The Environmental Performance Advisory Committee is a group of administrators, faculty, and students that is looking at ways to reduce the campus' greenhouse emissions. The campus has greatly reduced its water consumption rate over the last 10 years, and UMass Dining Services buys a decent percentage of its food from local sources. For students looking to get involved, there are several organizations at UMass that focus on green living and sustainability.

Favorite Things To Do

The Blue Wall Eatery and Café in the Campus Center often has live music acts and open mic nights that students like to check out. Most of the dorms have pool tables and lounges with nice TVs where students watch movies or just relax. Also, there are plays throughout the year that are quite popular. Students also like to participate in intramural sports, go to parties, join one of the more than 200 registered student organizations, go on a hike, or go shopping at Holyoke Mall.
