Not true. Every fraternity and sorority contribute a lot more than you think. All you see and care about mentioning is the social scene. Look at each organization to see what they have done for the community.

Apologies. This is just from the point of view of somebody who is not involved in the Greek life.

Greek life doesn't dominate the UMass social scene, but it is a large part of it. Frat houses are generally viewed on campus as the party spots for most freshmen and some sophomores who don't know any upperclassmen with apartments where they can party. Although not an overwhelming part of campus, they host events and make their presence known. Some of the frats and sororities are very involved with the local community and school projects, and some are not. In general, fraternities are loved by many, but not by all. Sororities, with the exception of one, do not throw parties and are therefore held in higher regard than the fraternities. The sororities based on campus are known to be very involved with philanthropies and are involved in social events with both fraternities and other sororities. The Greek community is tight-knit, and students get as much out of it as they put in.

Greek Life!
Greek Life!
Greek Life! Greek Life! Greek life is a wonderful part of Umass. Although it is not the main focus of campus, being a part of Greek life is a great experience because you meet an enormous amount of people and make the closest friends!
