Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Without a doubt, UMass has some remarkable student bodies and more than its share of attractive people—you can observe some beautiful scenery walking around campus. It’s easy to meet people because there are dozens of possibilities and places to do so, whether it’s in class, at a party, or getting food at the dining hall. Random hookups happen here all the time, but by no means is everyone doing it. It is also very possible to find people looking for serious relationships if you look in the right places (i.e. NOT at a frat party).

It is difficult to describe the average student because there are so many differences, especially among living areas on campus. A stereotypical girl who lives in the Southwest Residential Area wears Uggs, spandex, and a North Face, and a stereotypical Southwest guy is athletic and wears sweatshirts and flat-rimmed hats. Central residents are considered artsy, hippies, or both. Orchard Hill has a reputation of housing smarter students, while Northeast is for the nerdier students. Sylvan is simply for the unfortunate or the recluse. Of course, none of these stereotypes are true for all individuals. When it comes down to it, there is someone to suit everyone’s tastes at UMass.

Student Body

Not too many 'drop-dead gorgeous' people, but a couple handfuls of good-looking students. UMass Amherst is EXTREMELY diverse when it comes to backgrounds, dress/looks, interests/social life; no matter who you are or what you like, you can find a group you "fit" in with and have fun. From my experience, most of the guys just wanted the "college hook-up"; those who refrain from this temptation seemed to be more likely to start actual relationships and leave UMass with a steady partner. The weekend social life pretty much consists of people who prefer going to the bars vs. people who prefer going to house parties; you'll find some that prefer both.. but they probably don't do so well academically!!

Facts

Social Scene

Contrary to what you might expect from a big school, students at UMass easily form groups of close friends and network in all areas of campus. Because of a common living situation or class schedule, students often find themselves interacting with the same people on a daily basis. In general, the people enrolled at UMass are very friendly; most freshmen are probably just as eager to make new friends as you are.

Hookups or Relationships?

The wide array of personalities really makes this topic subjective. If you are looking for your future husband/wife at a frat party, good luck. Then again, if you are looking for just one night of company, you probably won't find him/her in the library. An estimated guess is that roughly 75 percent of the relationships that begin at UMass are not altogether serious, and therefore end at UMass.

Wear whatever you'd like and you'll be accepted by like-minded people.
