Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Not only is the nightlife at UMass unlike anywhere else, but you can find a party just about any night of the week. The most popular nights for partying are Thursday through Saturday, but Tuesday is also a common going-out night. The bigger parties usually occur at the frat houses, off-campus apartments, and downtown Amherst, whereas the smaller parties generally happen in the dorms. Most of the fraternities and one of the sororities throw parties every weekend, and these are mostly attended by freshmen and people looking for random hookups. The bars in Amherst are good, while the clubs are few and far between.

As you meet more people at UMass, it gets easier to find parties on and off campus. Most likely, if you don't know of any parties yourself, someone you know does. It helps to get involved in a sport or a club, but if all else fails, you can usually find a party just by wandering around popular party areas like Puffton or Southwest. Getting off campus—or even across it—to parties is easy if you use the bus system. In fact, the majority of students say they prefer to use the PVTA to get to parties, while a smaller percentage prefers to walk. Other options include using a designated driver or a cab, though taxis can sometimes be expensive.

Looking for a Good Time? Look No Further.

You may have heard of the parties at Umass Amherst from Alumni or friends that go there but you won't really know unless you find out for yourself. Whereever you go, you're guaranteed to have a good time. Some popular places are local frats, the local apartment complexes or a house around the corner. No matter where you end up, your ride home is just a phone call away. Cabs and taxis are always available and will pick you up anywhere. Buses to and from campus are also available into certain hours of the night-watch out for those singalongs.

Zoomass Parties!

Partying at UMass is probably what most students look forward to after a long week of classes. For some it's going out every night from Thursday through Saturday or Sunday. There are a few nice local bars around, and night clubs in the next town over. If you're into the frat house parties they're endless. There's even buses that run pretty much everywhere all night long. One can even have a blast in a good old fashioned dorm party too.

Facts

Club Crawler

The clubs in Amherst are awful, they are tiny and don’t offer much in the way of music. If you have your heart set on a club, go to Holyoke, Northampton, or Springfield. Springfield has a great club called the Hippodrome that a lot of UMass students go to.

Bar Prowler

Amherst has a lot of bars, most of which are good. The Blue Wall is the only bar on campus, a good place to go if you don’t want to risk driving home. The center of Amherst is always lively on the weekends and worth checking out because of all the bars, which also makes it a great place to go bar-hopping.

Organization Parties

Many of the athletic teams on campus—varsity and intramural—throw parties regularly. Most are held at houses where members of the team live or at local bars and restaurants. The majority of parties thrown by UMass clubs are open to everyone, although some require membership of some form.
