Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus housing is similar to living in the dorms, except you get a bathroom and kitchen that you don’t have to share with 30 people. Most students who move off campus do so their junior or senior year, and if done right, it can be cheaper to live off campus than in a dorm. However, on the downside, you have to worry about getting to class. You can either take the bus, which is relatively convenient, or drive your own car, which is relatively inconvenient because the parking lots are far from the classrooms, and you have to purchase a parking permit. The most convenient living situation would be to find an apartment on the bus route that is also close to campus. Another option is to get a house, which sometimes requires more than four roommates, or it won’t leave much in your bank account.

Some of the apartment complexes get just as crazy on the weekends as the dorms, with the occasional “Yankees suck” riot. On the other hand, some of the housing complexes are quiet and occupied by more families than students. There are many options when it comes to living off campus, so keep an open mind to find what's best for you and don't just stick to the most popular areas. The biggest issue with living off campus is transportation. If you have a car and don’t mind long walks or if you live on the bus route then you’ve got it made in the shade with pink lemonade.

Easy and Affordable Off Campus Housing

The school provides lots of assistance and advice when searching for off campus housing. There are lots of options very close/ within walking distance to campus that are usually affordable depending on how many roommates you have, and even more options a short drive or bus ride from the campus that are even less expensive.

Off-Campus Housing at University of Massachusetts

Housing in Amherst is really expensive. This is due to the fact that it is a college city. It houses two universities including the one that I attend. Convenience is more important to students so they just deal with it. Housing is highly competitive that it is not very easy to get a place. Another problem is racism. The University of Massachusetts has had a student drinking reputation. That causes a big problem in Amherst as its local night clubs had had violence issues.

Nice Area

Amherst is a great area to live in, the housing is pretty affordable and all close to the school. There are also a lot of options for different places to live so there is a place for everyone. The only con is that sometimes off campus living can be a little crazy since many college kids will all live in one apartment area or housing area.
