Nursing

Getting into the program here did not have many extra challenges. I believe that I submitted the regular college application but I had to apply earlier. They are really looking for good grades and people who are leaders and got involved in high school. It is really hard to transfer into the program here, so I would suggest applying for it now rather than making a decision later.

Nursing

As a nursing major, I would definately choose this field and this school all over again if I had to. My career goals are to one day be a nurse at a hospital in Boston. I would love to be an ER nurse and I know that Umass will prepare me for this kind of role. I have no concerns about finding a job, because I feel that my degree here will impress many future employers.

Nursing at Umass Amherst

I am so proud to be a nurse at Umass. We have one of the best programs around. The Sim Lab is amazing and you feel so prepared for when you have real life clinicals. The courses can be intensive but that is only to make you feel confident that you understand the material. I have learned so much here and the professors really take time out of their schedules to help you. Not to mention that having a title as a nursing student at Umass Amherst really gives you a boost when you are looking for internships.

Very Underrated

Many of our programs are consistently ranked higher than other area schools (BU, BC, NYU), especially in business, nursing, and engineering.

Perfect College Town

Amherst is absolutely the perfect college location. It is wonderfully rural. You can see the stars clearly on any given night and it is big enough that there is lots of space to be outside on nice days. UMass is far from isolated, however. It is ten or fifteen minute walk into Amherst Center, a very quaint town with numerous coffee house, book stores, and pizza places. A little longer (but free) bus ride wil take you right into North Hampton, which has a wonderfully laid back atmosphere, as does most of the area. Besides that though, North Hampton has everything you could ever want to do, see, or buy. Overall, UMass is situated perfectly: not in the middle of a busy city, but certainly not cut off from civilization either.

So Much Farmland!

When you're on your way to UMass it seems like your out in the country. The surrounding towns of Sunderland and Deerfield consist of huge fields of local farms. Then suddenly you see skyscrapers and tons of buildings. Welcome to UMass. It's almost like its own city. There is so much to do around the college and so many community and cultural events. There's fresh farm food, a huge shopping district in Hadley, tons of delicious local restaurants (pizza, crepes, ice cream and more). It's hard to get bored here because not only do the surrounding towns have tons of things to do, but just on campus events are always occurring. We have a fine arts center where performances take place, and bands and musicians come. There are art galleries and museums just on campus too. There's a lounge for students where on most Friday nights a movie is played. There's also a craft center with art supplies for the creative kind and a bike coop where you can rent a bike for the day. Feeling more active? Then head over to the Recreation center. The campus has two older gyms with swimming pools and other activities, in addition to the newer recreation center. You can take yoga, kickboxing, cycling, and even wrestling classes. Or you can lift some weights on your own or get your cardio on with one of the countless machines available. There is always something to do when you're at UMass whether it's heading into town to get something fresh and delicious to eat, or getting some exercise in, there's so much.

Campus Housing at University of Massachusetts - Amherst

If You Get Good Housing It's Livable

The housing process can be quite chaotic. Freshmen are guaranteed housing so it's no hassle for them. Upperclassmen however have it tough. With over 20,000 students all trying to get into housing many students are left searching for apartments off campus or get stuck in the skyscraper dorms of southwest when they just wanted a nice peaceful building in central or southwest. The rooms in orchard hill are nice and spacious and have a big closet. Going up the hill is never fun though, even for the most fit, athletic kinds of people.

Great Atmosphere

UMASS Amherst is huge and diverse just as a campus, but the local Amherst area is fantastic as well. Just outside campus there are tons of small shops and parks, which have a lot events when the weather is on the warmer side. There's a lot of shopping around, people are generally very nice toward the students, and it's a good area that feels very safe.

Music Education

I am a music education major in the music department at umass amherst. (art of the college of humanities and fine arts.) Although the facilities are ugly and out of date they are safe(the building is an old bomb shelter.) and the faculty and staff is AMAZING! They are all like family, students and staff. Teachers are always there for you. A lot of them are nationally known for their great teaching skills as well. It is a heavy workload, not really in homework or papers but you are expected to do a lot of practicing for a lot of different classes. In the end it is all worth it and I LOVE what I do!

Freshman Dorms

Depending on which area you live in on campus, freshman dorms at UMass Amherst can be a great way to meet friends your age! I may be a bit biased having lived there, but Van Meter in Central is one of the best freshman dorms on campus. I met so many great people and friends in my first weeks at school!

Welcome to the Zoo

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, is also known as "zoomass" because of the parties. The party scene on the weekends is insane and you are always given many options. Compared to my hometown, people dress up much more when going out, as girls will always be found in a skirt, blazer, and heels and guys in polos.

There but Not Vital

Everyone calls it "zoomass" but its really not that bad. Yes most people drink on the weekends and a good amount of people do pot etc. but its no more than other places. Its college, what do you expect? But if you dont want to do any of that youre totally fine, theres always other things going on.

It's a Big School, but

There's freshman only housing which helps you get acclimated. There are rules, but they aren't overreacing so people don't have a hard time meeting them. Drugs and alcohol oversight is probably standard for a large college campus--strict but can't be everywhere all the time. Be smart, and that means don't abuse yourself, either.

The transportation isn't the BEST, but there are always buses running to practically the whole town... I wouldn't say it's the most pleasant form of transportation, but it's still very convenient.

Great Education and Atmosphere

I'm definitely glad that I made the decision to come to Umass. The classes I've taken have been great, and all of my professors have been intelligent, easy to learn from, and helpful. The dorms are decent, the food is good, and the on-campus and off-campus atmosphere is awesome!

Drugs and Alcohol

Umass is non for being party school, but it has definitely been cut back in recent years. There are still a ton of parties and things it do in the area. Drugs become more apparent as your get more involved in the social scene. There is booze always readily available, and always a place to drink it. But there are kids who dont drink and they have fun too, all depends on where you live on campus.

All Ways Somethind to Do

Weather or not you're into getting hammered there is always something to do around school. There are a variety of venues bringing a number of great national bands to Northampton which is only a a short bus ride away. There movie theaters, both independent and national chains, a ton of interesting stores, and of course lots of parties.

Fitting in Is Easy

Without a doubt, diversity is present at UMass. You meet different people raised from different backgrounds and circumstances. UMass is just so big that you couldn't go a day without meeting someone who doesn't share the same values and opinions as you. I came from a small white suburb so to come to UMass has been refreshing. The students here are more accepting of "different".

Amherst Center Has a Lot to Offer

There are a lot of vegetarian options throughout the whole town which is great if you're into that sort of thing. Most places are pretty expensive thought unless you have a special dining plan to eat at certain places off campus. Antonio's pizza is very cheap at night though, about a $1 a slice.

Great Concerts and Other Events

There's a gerat variety of music, perfomances, speakers and more. Prices are good, too. The free bus also takes you to the other schools in the area where you can see more music and do other things there.
