College Prowler Take
Surprisingly, varsity sports on campus are not very big, especially when compared to universities of similar size, like UConn or some Boston schools. A lot of the less popular sports are now done away with, and you’ll never have a problem finding a seat at a football or basketball game. On the plus side, all tickets for sporting events are free for students. Conversely, intramural sports are big, and a great distraction from homework. The athletic facilities on campus are decent, but nothing to write home about. If you play a varsity sport, then you’ll have access to very nice gyms with much newer equipment. The Mullins Center is a beautiful arena, and the surrounding athletic fields, which include all of the intramural fields, are also in good shape. The person who spoke in the last quote accurately stated that the Red Sox are more popular here than the Minutemen. UMass has a large Boston influence, and most of the enthusiasm displayed by students gets directed towards Boston teams. Until the situation with the budget cuts improves, you can predict a further decline of quality at UMass in terms of athletics.

Compared to what I've been used...
Compared to what I've been used to—living and breathing Penn State's Beaver Stadium—the athletics program is pathetic here. I am guessing that there is little to no money being brought in by these programs in comparison to the Big Ten schools. A decent majority of kids will attend hockey games, but from what I've heard, the football games are nothing special. There are a lot of fun IM programs though, such as co-ed soccer and flag football.

Lots of Minutemen Pride
B+
Football, hockey, and basketball games are popular social activities. The football team isn't all that great, but hockey and basketball do well. There are a lot of sports offered.

Good Sports, Great Facilities
B+
People want to see their our teams win, but at the end of the day its all about the partying. Most people I know frequently go to the football tailgates but rarely to the game itself, and many many people ditch the hockey games early because they've lost their buzz. The hockey team, as far as I know, performs the best. As far as athletic facilities go, we have a brand new recreational center that opened literally two weeks ago. It is phenomenal.

UMass has a lot of...
UMass has a lot of nationally-competitive varsity teams that practically no one knows about. People only care about the men’s basketball and football teams. The Red Sox are more popular here than the Minutemen. |
