College Prowler Take
UMass has five major clusters of dormitories. Each has buildings that are worth avoiding either because the rooms are too small or because you won’t be able to get work done. Overall, Central and Orchard Hill have the best dorms, although Southwest has “Z-rooms” that are worth checking out. Living in one of the Southwest towers can be a grueling experience, depending on the floor. One problem with living in Sylvan or Orchard Hill is the long walk to class. On the other hand, there are bus stops everywhere, which are free, and they come about every five minutes. Northeast is nice because it has a sand volleyball court, and once spring hits, everyone goes outside to socialize. UMass is good about placing students in the buildings they request, but since UMass enrolls more students than there is room for, freshmen rarely get a single. Not to mention that when the dorm rooms run out, a handful of students have to stay in the Campus Center Hotel until a spot opens up. Most dorms have TV rooms and a pool table, so living on campus is a good way to make friends at a large school—you are sure to meet some interesting people. Since UMass is a party school, the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting on the weekends. Much of how you perceive living on campus has to do with your roommate, so if you get stuck with someone whose behavior isn’t congruent with your own, change rooms immediately.

Dorms Are Great!
A
The dorms on campus are great. Freshman will always get housing and most likely their first or second choice. You are allowed to stay on campus all 4 years, but most people choose to live off campus their junior and senior year. We also offer lots of programs to get students more involved and make more friends. It isn't too expensive but does get cheaper if you do decide to move off campus.

Orchard Hill
A-
Orchard Hill has the biggest doubles on campus. The individual closets are great. The large desks and shelf space are very useful. However, the general set-up of the rooms don't allow for a creative set up. The bed placement is very limited. The buildings themselves are ugly on the outside but the bowl and the hill are pleasant scenery.

Depends on your personality
B+
Being happy where you live all depends on your personality. If you are a person who loves to be social and loves hearing something going on on your floor all the time, Southwest might be the place for you. Central, Northeast, and Orchard Hill, in my opinion, are the best places to live. They are scenic, the dorms are as good as they are going to get, and they are close to central campus. I had a very bad time in Sylvan Residential Area because it is so far from campus. They are suite-style and I never met my floormates because of the privacy of a suite. I didn't get a good vibe from the area or the building and I hated walking to my 8 a.m. classes that were 15 minutes away in the snow. Many freshmen, however, get placed in either Sylvan or Southwest. Sometimes it is worth it to join a RAP, just so you are placed in a good living area.

Find the area of campus that fits you
B
Living on campus is very specific to what kind of person you are. If you live in the wrong area of campus, then your school experience will be torturous and not what it potentially could be. If you live in the appropriate area as to who you are, then it will be great. The campus is divided by categories. This may consist of blondes/athletic "bros", Asians, hippies, geeks, etc. For example, I know that central was great for me because I fit in with the people, and everyone was super friendly and very welcoming. I know that when I went to Southwest, it is was intimidating and there are many people who I do not share any interests with. Convenience of housing is fine, but the ease of process is a little rough but not unbearable.

Dorms need improvement
C
The dorms on campus could be in a lot better condition than they are in. The past two years have not been satisfactory. There are alot of insect problems, broken windows that do not close/lock, and issues getting in and out of my room because of a broken door knob. However, this year I have noticed a lot of improvements such as a new front door on Baker and new washers/dryers.
