Excessive drug use on campus has not recently been a concern. The UMass newspaper, the Daily Collegian, prints arrests that were made the day before, and the number-one cause of arrests on campus is drugs (specifically, weed), whether student or non-student. Even so, the number of drug-related arrests on campus, given the number of students, is unexpectedly low. Drugs can be found at UMass, but in no way are they unavoidable. Once in a great while, you may smell the odor of marijuana in a dormitory hallway, but almost never will you come across someone doing a harder drug. Maybe this is because drug users at UMass are few or because they are very clandestine about their behavior.

Central has the most noticeable drug culture on campus, but Southwest is not far behind. The UMPD and Amherst Police Department do their jobs well and deter people from doing drugs. For instance, one semester, a large drug bust was made in Southwest where police confiscated large quantities of drugs and money. Sure enough, the front page of the next day’s Daily Collegian was completely devoted to covering this story. Tactics like that are just one of the ways police remind students that narcotics and weapons will not be tolerated on campus.

The drug scene here is very... The drug scene here is very noticeable, especially the use of weed. A lot of people here smoke weed, and it isn’t hard to get. Once in a while, you will see people doing coke or pills like OxyContin and Vicadin at a party, but it is all very avoidable. Although, if you don’t want to be around drugs, I suggest not living in Southwest or Central. 12345 Drug Scene Report
