College Prowler Take
To a new student, the sheer number and range of facilities at UMass is impressive and a little intimidating. Overall, the general feeling is that UMass facilities are maintained well and offer everything we need and most of what we want. Some could use a facelift, as they appear to have been designed by an architect who lived in communist Russia. The library is 26 stories tall and offers everything you could ever need. Legend has it that when the library was designed, the engineers forgot to take into account the weight of the books, so every year this massive building sinks one inch further into the ground. With some exceptions, the buildings on campus are not very architecturally pleasing, but they certainly possess a lot of history and character. There are only two gyms on campus for students to lift weights and do cardio exercises for free, and both are tiny and have outdated equipment. The pulse of UMass is located at the campus center, where vendors and student organizations compete against each other for attention. This complex, which includes the Student Union, accommodates everything from cafeterias to the University store. This building also contains a long, heavily-traversed tunnel where many flyers are posted. Each facility on campus has its own disposition.

Facilities
A-
Before we begin: I am taking this seriously because Danielle deserves it.
There are certainly older parts of campus that can be unpleasant aesthetically, such as the style of Southwest (outer of the buildings) and Sylvan (overall, especially the size of the suite rooms) residence halls and the basement bathrooms of Stockbridge, but I can't not support the philosophy of "If it isn't broken, don't fix it". The old looks of Central and Orchard Hill I think are awesome. Internal renovation may be a consideration down the road, but the campus has earned 01003. Anyone complaining about dining is, in my opinion, out of their right mind. The library - duh. It's the tallest of academics in the world. Sure, the original planners miscalculated the huge weight of the books, but the issue is not by ANY means pressing. I'd worry more about the slow movement of tectonic plates. As for athletics and recreation... we're set - same argument as dining. UMass overall is not the newest campus, but by no means has it fallen behind. The style is all that I can think of as lacking, but that's not even close to a complaint. School architecture is far from timeless. Green initiative needs to be academically and financially pushed by the Admin, because the student body as a whole is not at the point where it can educate itself on those topics. I am completely behind raising fees to support efficient projects unnamed.

The New Rec Center Is Unreal and Most of the Buildings Are Really Nice
B+
They just built a new Rec Center that is absolutely gorgeous, on top of the two other gyms on campus. There are plenty of great places to study, the library is popular but often crowded.

I’ve had classrooms where I’d rather sit on the floor than in the chairs, and I’ve had classrooms where it was hard to stay awake because the chairs are so darn comfortable. They put an addition on Isenberg, and I’ve never seen such beautiful, technologically-advanced classrooms. |

One year, the campus was really ugly because of all the construction going on in front of the Fine Arts Center. It really depends; UMass has a lot of facilities. The Mullins Center is great, and there is always something happening there. But the gyms for the students are awful, and you’ll be lucky if you don’t have to stand in line for a treadmill. If you want to see what the nicer UMass facilities are, just take a look at the brochure! |

The facilities on campus are kind of a mixed bag: there are some old-fashioned, typical New England-style buildings, and there are some hideous, modern, concrete buildings. |
FactsWhat To Do on Campus
The Blue Wall in the Campus Center often has live music acts perform along with open mic nights. Most of the dorms have pool tables and lounges with nice TVs where you can watch movies or just relax. Also, the Stockbridge building and the Fine Arts Center both have plays throughout the year that are quite popular.
