Getting a Parking Permit

Applying for a parking permit at UMass is relatively simple, you could go to their offices, call by phone, or visit their Web site. The parking lots are designated by color, the yellow lots being the most undesirable because they are unpaved, crime-ridden, and far away from everything. Freshmen and sophomores are restricted to the yellow, purple, and green lots which cost $155, $195, and $235, respectively. Another option is the campus garage; conveniently located at the center of campus; this option is probably the most expensive

College Prowler Take

The parking situation at UMass is atrocious. The entire campus is surrounded by parking lots that are always packed and often unpaved. If you decide on bringing a car to UMass your freshman and sophomore years, do not bring a good one or even one with a stereo. Having a car your junior and senior years if you live off campus makes a little more sense, but you will still have to walk great distances, drive around in circles looking for a spot, deal with bottomless potholes, and risk theft.

Something that people learn the hard way in Amherst is that meter maids hand out violations like candy on Halloween.  Bringing a car to UMass as a freshman and sophomore is basically a bad idea. Besides, there isn’t anywhere you’ll need to go that a free bus ride can’t accommodate. If you absolutely require some mode of transportation, then bring, in order of convenience: a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, rollerblades, street luge, pogo stick, figure skates, unicycle, stilts, swimming flippers, and, lastly, a car—get the point?

Expensive and Innconvient Parking

C-

When you look around campus there are plenty of parking lots and parking spaces which makes you think that parking on campus is good. This is not the case. The average parking permit costs over $250 per year, and the locations of the lots are not very convient or close to the dorms. And if you have a friend or your parents visiting during the week, they will have to buy a pass for the day, or else they WILL get a ticket.

Cars Are Optional

A-

The permit costs vary depending on the convenience of your parking spot. They can range from about $160-$300 a year. Cars are definitely not needed on campus but are helpful for those who live off campus and out of state. You can even have a car on campus as a freshman. There are always many parking spots/permits available but not all are convenient depending on where you live. Overall, the parking situation is pretty helpful.

Very Strict about Meters

C+

If you are late to a meter by any more than two minutes, they will find you, and they will ticket you. Parking services is fair about granting appeals to unnecessary tickets, but it is a huge hassle.

Tough Parking Situation, It's Better to Walk to Class

C+

If you're on campus, just get a permit and park your car during the week. It's easier to walk to class than take time to park. If you're off campus, try and take the bus for classes. Ticketing is severe and not having a permit will most certainly result in getting towed. However, the absence of this rule on the weekends makes it easy for friends to visit.

It depends on where you are going; they all have their drawbacks. If you live in the dorms, then the best place to park is near your building, if possible.
