College Prowler Take

The public transportation system at UMass and in Amherst virtually balances out the substandard parking situation. On campus, the bus stops are strategically located near classroom buildings, dormitories, libraries, and dining halls, and are frequented by a bus about every five to ten minutes. UMass shuttles are available for physically disabled persons and will go everywhere on campus. The best part is you don’t need a bus schedule because destinations are electronically displayed on each bus. Taxi’s are convenient if you need to get somewhere in the immediate area—if you don’t feel like walking.

Luckily, because so many students do bring their cars to school, the chances of you being able to catch a ride with someone else or borrow a friend’s car are pretty good. In fact, the transportation here is so good that seeing a hitchhiker means you get to make a wish. Everything at UMass is only an arm’s length away. An advantage of living in a fraternity or sorority house is that you are equidistant from both campus and the center of town, both of which are within walking distance.

The Bus Is Your Best Friend

A+

I started using the bus as soon as I got to UMass and it was absolutely the best decision ever. It really helps you out when you want to get to the opposite side of campus, or up the giant hill in central. It's especially helpful when you just don't feel like walking to class because UMass is a significantly large campus and walking can sometimes take a while. There are aslo buses that go out of town and to the other 4 colleges around the area and it's all free, as long as you show your ID!

PVTA Buses Are Fantastic

A-

The Pioneer Valley Buses are great. Not only do they service the UMass campus, they go to the neighboring Amherst, Smith, Hampshire and Mount Holyoke colleges. They buses are also free to college students which adds to their overall greatness. They are typically on time too.

Lots of Bus Routes

B+

Lots of bus routes! Very useful for around campus, downtown and route 9. Unforunately they are a hassel on the weekends when everyone is trying to get to parties! Not fun being sandwiched between two really drunk people. Good they have cops on the buses for these times though. Makes you feel more safe!
