College Prowler Take
The public transportation system at UMass and in Amherst virtually balances out the substandard parking situation. On campus, the bus stops are strategically located near classroom buildings, dormitories, libraries, and dining halls, and are frequented by a bus about every five to ten minutes. UMass shuttles are available for physically disabled persons and will go everywhere on campus. The best part is you don’t need a bus schedule because destinations are electronically displayed on each bus. Taxi’s are convenient if you need to get somewhere in the immediate area—if you don’t feel like walking. Luckily, because so many students do bring their cars to school, the chances of you being able to catch a ride with someone else or borrow a friend’s car are pretty good. In fact, the transportation here is so good that seeing a hitchhiker means you get to make a wish. Everything at UMass is only an arm’s length away. An advantage of living in a fraternity or sorority house is that you are equidistant from both campus and the center of town, both of which are within walking distance.

Public transportation for getting...
Public transportation for getting to off-campus apartments and into town is pretty reliable. If you're trying to get to the grocery store, Target, or Wal-Mart, that's another story. The buses are not frequent or consistent and there is only one stop on campus at Haigus Mall.

The buses are free and go...
The buses are free and go everywhere, but they are never on time and so overcrowded that sometimes they won't even stop for people at the bus stop. They are supposed to run every 15 minutes, but I have been left out in the snow for 40 minutes waiting for a bus.

As far as getting to your classes...
As far as getting to your classes is concerned, you might as well take the bus. If you need to go off campus though, it is nice to have a car. The traffic here is pretty brutal, especially right before the Coolie Dickinson Bridge in the afternoons. All in all, I’d say that it’s pretty easy to get where you need to go here. |

All the buses make big loops...
All the buses make big loops around town, so all you have to do is find a bus stop on the right side of the street. Even if you live off campus, you don’t need a car here. The buses are packed in the mornings, and they pay students a lot of money to drive them, in case you were looking for a job. |
