College Prowler Take

Meteorology in New England is similar to astrology; you’d do just as well predicting the weather by using tarot cards. None of the seasons are consistent with the previous year’s, and each one is dramatically different. This is good news if you are an outdoors person because it means an endless supply of things to do. The average temperatures listed at the beginning of this section don’t really do weather at UMass justice, since everything is in a constant state of change. Some years, you may get numerous feet of snow, and some years, you may be wearing shorts in November. This category really depends on what you are used to and what’s important to you.

Weather should be the last criterion you consider when choosing a college. However, if weather is an important factor to you, realize that when you come here and hate the climate, it probably won’t be like that in two to three weeks. And cold weather doesn’t mean it’s still not fun. When we get a lot of snow, a lot of the students grab trays from the dining commons and go sledding at a large hill in the Central residence area. Also, the fall here is something you will never forget. So, if you haven’t yet experienced one, now is your chance!

It Really Affects Me

B-

In the Fall/Winter it can get VERY cold which makes it hard to motivate yourself to walk the far distance to class. But if it snows just a little they will cancel classes so that is pretty nice.

B

The winter weather is bitter cold, and snow makes it undesirable to walk to class, as the campus is so large and walks are very long.

This Is New England

That should be enough information. Otherwise, the fact (rumor?) that the campus was modeled somewhat after Arizona(?ASU?), which needed to facilitate wind, is a little bit of a nuisance. Actually during the winter it can be downright treacherous. I have been able to stand at a slight angle while the wind held me up. Oh and the slush build-up. But, much of the campus is being re-paved, so we hope that is not an issue in the near future. Also, I grew up here. I wouldn't have it any other way.

It is very windy. I don't like the cold, so it is torture to walk too far to a class when it's freezing out.
