College Prowler Take

The school has two dining halls, both with pretty standard college buffet food. The variety sounds good—pizza, pastas, made-to-order sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, salads, and ice cream are only a few of the daily staples—but nothing is of very high quality. Most students don’t mind the food at first, but they get really sick of it sometime around Halloween of their freshman year. This is about how long it takes to realize that all the different foods have the same greasy taste. Even the salad and the ice cream are almost indistinguishable if you don’t look at them.

Freshmen usually start with the comfortable 14-meal plan, which allows for 14 meals at the dining hall per week. Unless you were raised on Sizzler, you’ll probably drop that to the eight-meal plan for your second semester, which is the minimum UM allows for a student living on campus. Either plan gives the student “dining dollars” that can be used like a debit card at the restaurants on campus. The 14-meal plan comes with $150 in dining dollars per semester, and the eight-meal plan gets you $200. This money is pretty valuable since UM has an excellent selection of fast food restaurants on campus. There’s a food court with Nikos, Panda Express, Jamba Juice, and Starbucks, and there’s even an overpriced take-out sushi bar if you feel like blowing all your dining dollars on the first day. Other places to eat include Sbarro, Subway, and the Rathskeller, a sports bar and popular meeting place. If you don’t use all of your dining dollars by the end of the semester, you can always head over to the campus convenience store and spend the remainder on junk food and prehistoric donuts.

Dining hall food is run-of-the-mill dining hall food. Not too good so you'll end up finding something you can bare/enjoy a little bit and you'll eat it way too much. Meal plans for dining halls are strict. Other people can't swipe for you. It's 8.50 or 9 bucks for a meal at the dining hall so if you run out, you're out of luck. Not much versatility in meal plan. If you're a freshman you can get 14 or you can get 20. 14 is not enough for some people and 20 is too many for nearly 99% of the students. Food Court, C-store, Sbarro's, and Subway are all pretty good options. You get 50$ to spend at these places for the semester when you get the 20 meal plan. You get $150 when you get the 14 meal plan. Food court, C-store, and Sbarro's are located in the middle of campus and are easy to get to. The problem is that on weekends, the food court closes. It also has terrible hours. Most places close before 5pm so dinner is limited to the dining hall, Sbarro's, or Subway.

The dining halls are, contrary to popular belief, actually not that bad. The food quality is usually decent (though the menu gets repetitive). If the dining halls are not what someone wants, there is also the on-campus Subway, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Sbarro, Panda Express, and more.

The dining hall food is alright. It gets repetitive, but the Stanford Dining Hall is really nice. The food court is nice. At the food court, there is a Taco Bell, a sandwich place, Chinese food, sushi bar, juice place, mini-Starbucks, and an ethnic food place.

I like the dining halls because there are a lot of choices, and you can either eat healthfully or not; whatever you like. Besides the dining halls, dining on campus gets really boring because there is only one other food court, and the menu there doesn’t vary much. We do have an on-campus Friday’s-type place students call the Rat.

Did You Know?

The dining halls stay open late once per semester for a “midnight breakfast” to help students who are up late studying for finals.

The dining halls are stocked with current issues of the student newspaper, as well as free copies of the local papers and USA Today for students to read while eating.
