Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you decide to attend UM, there will be a form you fill out ranking the residential colleges by preference. This seems to be basically useless, as almost all freshmen are placed in Hecht or Stanford, also called the Towers. Although the other dorms are bigger and don’t have communal bathrooms, most students agree that spending a year in the Towers is a good experience because it forces you to meet people. The suites in Mahoney, Pearson, and Eaton are nicer, but some students like the atmosphere in the Towers so much that they keep their rooms for the next year. The Towers are definitely the most wild and fun dorms, then Mahoney and Pearson, where some floors have a good social atmosphere. Eaton is generally considered the quietest of the residential colleges, which many people might prefer.

If you’re lucky and you have a good RA, your floor will turn into a big family. Video game tournaments and hallway sports are common, and chances are, at least a few people on your floor will be friends that you keep in touch with for the rest of college. A lot of upperclassmen try to get into the apartments, which are tough to reserve. The layout is nice, but the buildings themselves are old and in random areas of campus where it’s hard to meet new people. In the past, there have been overcrowding issues, and students have been sent to the Holiday Inn across the street from campus. Even though a free hotel room with maid service and HBO might sound like a good deal, avoid this at all costs if you have any desire to meet people and make friends.

I was a sophomore this year & it was my first experience living on campus. I like it alot. My roomate & I got along fine. There were plenty of dorm activities if I wanted to participate. Security was good. The distance from other buildings (cafeteria & classrooms) was fine. I was a good experience.

Although freshman dorms at The U can be rough some times (loud, messy and often smelling of cheap vodka) it gets better year by year. Mahoney/Pearson, typical sophomore dorms, are much better than freshman and you have your own bathroom! The best are on campus apartments at the UV. It's a perfect place to meet new friends, too because everyone is always outside and socializing!

Suite Life.

Housing on campus is pretty nice. Buildings are kept fairly clean (freshman dorms w/community bathrooms are cleaned daily). The room space is actually very decent, even for first year students. Residential staff are pretty awesome. The Resident Masters and their families really make each dorm feel more like home. The Apartments on campus are SPECTACULAR. The greatest part of being a junior. Cost of housing is slightly high, but they are of pretty good quality. Residential staff are always planning cool events and free dinners. Even dorm-wide study breaks during finals. Also, housing units are equipped with beds, desks and armoirs. And all have AC.
