College Prowler Take
If you decide to attend UM, there will be a form you fill out ranking the residential colleges by preference. This seems to be basically useless, as almost all freshmen are placed in Hecht or Stanford, also called the Towers. Although the other dorms are bigger and don’t have communal bathrooms, most students agree that spending a year in the Towers is a good experience because it forces you to meet people. The suites in Mahoney, Pearson, and Eaton are nicer, but some students like the atmosphere in the Towers so much that they keep their rooms for the next year. The Towers are definitely the most wild and fun dorms, then Mahoney and Pearson, where some floors have a good social atmosphere. Eaton is generally considered the quietest of the residential colleges, which many people might prefer. If you’re lucky and you have a good RA, your floor will turn into a big family. Video game tournaments and hallway sports are common, and chances are, at least a few people on your floor will be friends that you keep in touch with for the rest of college. A lot of upperclassmen try to get into the apartments, which are tough to reserve. The layout is nice, but the buildings themselves are old and in random areas of campus where it’s hard to meet new people. In the past, there have been overcrowding issues, and students have been sent to the Holiday Inn across the street from campus. Even though a free hotel room with maid service and HBO might sound like a good deal, avoid this at all costs if you have any desire to meet people and make friends.

I like living on campus and all of the benefits that come with it, which include waking up and going to class without worrying about parking and meeting more people through the residence halls. |

The dorms are a great environment. There are freshman dorms (Stanford and Hecht), which are a really fun time. They are coed by floor, and the rooms are doubles. There really is not a set of dorms to stay away from, as they are pretty much all the same set-up. I currently reside in Eaton Residential College, which is for sophomores and upperclassmen. It is a suite setup and connects through the restroom. |

The dorms are livable. The towers (Stanford and Hecht) are generally less sought-after due to the communal bathrooms, but they have a much better social atmosphere. The suites (Eaton, Pearson, and Mahoney) have one bathroom per two rooms and are a bit larger, but they offer a much less social atmosphere. |

Most freshmen live in the Towers,...
Most freshmen live in the Towers, and they’re not as bad as you would imagine. They have bathrooms down the hall, but they’re generally really clean for shared bathrooms. Then, there are the suite-style rooms which involve cleaning your own bathroom. That kind of sucks, but the rooms are much better shaped and brighter. There are also on-campus apartments. |
