Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although most of the classroom buildings around UM are hideously ugly, the insides are generally decent and the newer buildings are very nice. The highlight of UM’s facilities is, by far, the Wellness Center—a huge gym located next to the dorms where most freshmen live. The building stays open until midnight on weeknights, allowing for late-night games of basketball, squash, or racquetball, which can provide a great study break. The multi-level gym has pretty much anything a student could want, and this is definitely something to look forward to when coming to UM. The other place where students spend a lot of time is the University Center, aptly located in the center of campus. The UC has a lounge with televisions, an information desk, food court, offices, and a convenience store, and it’s attached to the bookstore and campus post office.

The UC is a nice enough place and will most likely only improve. There is a movie theater in a corner of campus that shows relatively new movies free to students, as well as art-house fare. Construction is booming on all of UM’s campuses, from a new nursing school facility, lecture and gallery spaces at the School of Architecture, a music library and technology center, and student center for the School of Communication on its Coral Gables campus, to a 15-story Clinical Research Institute and Wellness Center at its medical school.

Up Grades

I've just completed my sophmore year. They have added to the athletic center, which is awsome! The music library looks maybe 5 years old and the new student center opens sometime in the fall. I like the campus.

Good for the Mind and the Body

Miami has fantastic facilities for improving both your mind and your body. The library is very large and is part of an inter-library loan system where you can request books from other university libraries across the country. The gym facilities are fantastic. There are two large pools on campus, one indoor and one outdoor, that are open year round. The Wellness Center has all of the workout equipment you could ever need and space for just about every sport imaginable as well as a hot tub and a snack bar that serves smoothies.

Favorite Things To Do

Some students gather in the Storm Surge Café at the UC to play pool, table tennis, foosball, backgammon, chess, and checkers, or watch TV. This area is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-11:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-11:30 p.m.

Others enjoy working out at the Wellness Center or playing sports on the massive IM Fields. Of course, there are also numerous Division 1A sporting events on and off campus, all of which are free to UM students with their ID cards.

The Wellness Center is a state-of-the-art gym located near two of the residential colleges. Access is free to students, making it a great place for health-conscious students and those just looking to play some basketball or take a swim.

There are also free movies for students at the campus theater, comedians and musicians at the Rathskellar, and top touring bands at the Convocation Center, which doubles as a basketball arena. Every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 pm a different band performs live on the UC Patio. This event is a free music series that showcases local, regional and national bands.

There is always some event being outside by the Whitten University Center, too, and the Bank United Center on the Coral Gables campus hosts concerts, family shows, trade shows, lectures, and sporting events. During the 2008 election season, President Obama held a rally at the Bank United Center.
