Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

To be able to live on campus, students have to not only pay for their dorm rooms but also their meal plans. Such costs on top of tuition lead to a very hefty payment at the beginning of each semester. Since Miami has many available places to live off campus, it may turn out to be a better financial decision to not live in the dorms, especially if you are going to share rent with a group of friends.Nothing can beat having your own privacy and bring able to sleep without someone in the next room making a ruckus at 4 a.m. A private laundry facility and bathrooms that come with having your own space are also a plus.

However, when living off campus, students get separated from the social atmosphere that is present when living in a dorm, but this all depends on how social you are. Still, depending on how far away your apartment is, traffic on US 1 is an absolute nightmare. An accident can make a 10-minute drive drag out to 30 or even 45 minutes. The traffic is nothing compared to the bad drivers that are prevalent throughout Miami. Sometimes it looks as if some people have barely passed their driving test. There is definitely some serious road rage here.Living with friends and experiencing the freedom that comes with living off campus may be worth it to some, but traffic may close the deal on living in dorms for all four years for others.

Red Road, Merrick, the Grove, and Many Other Options

Housing in Miami is expensive. It's not much more to live on campus than to life off campus, and you definitely need a car or a bike to get to campus from the off-campus apartments and houses. The houses in the area are very expensive, but very beautiful. The apartments such as Red Road and Merrick aren't the best to live in, but they're not too bad for college students.

Freshman Housing on-Campus

It is policy at the university that unless a freshman is a commuter, they must spend their first two semesters on-campus. I am a freshman and so I am living in the freshman towers. I have not thought about off-campus housing.

Expensive!

It's relatively easy to find places to live off campus, but it is so expensive here in Miami. They know that you're students, so the closer that you try to live to campus, the more expensive they get. And then, housing in the Grove or closer to South Beach also gets very expensive.
