Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

To be able to live on campus, students have to not only pay for their dorm rooms but also their meal plans. Such costs on top of tuition lead to a very hefty payment at the beginning of each semester. Since Miami has many available places to live off campus, it may turn out to be a better financial decision to not live in the dorms, especially if you are going to share rent with a group of friends.Nothing can beat having your own privacy and bring able to sleep without someone in the next room making a ruckus at 4 a.m. A private laundry facility and bathrooms that come with having your own space are also a plus.

However, when living off campus, students get separated from the social atmosphere that is present when living in a dorm, but this all depends on how social you are. Still, depending on how far away your apartment is, traffic on US 1 is an absolute nightmare. An accident can make a 10-minute drive drag out to 30 or even 45 minutes. The traffic is nothing compared to the bad drivers that are prevalent throughout Miami. Sometimes it looks as if some people have barely passed their driving test. There is definitely some serious road rage here.Living with friends and experiencing the freedom that comes with living off campus may be worth it to some, but traffic may close the deal on living in dorms for all four years for others.

Off-Campus Housing at University of Miami

Miami Housing.

The off-campus housing surrounding the University of Miami is specifically designed to cater to a Miami student. The housing are relatively expensive, but since the average University of Miami student is usually more well-off than the average college student, landlords find this to be no big deal. The safety of the area has improved drastically in recent years, but still carries the stigma and stereotype of crime from years past. Overall, it is no more unsafe than the average big city. The housing quality is pretty average, nothing exceptionally special but it definetly has all needed qualities for well functioning home. Every, and I mean EVERY, form of housing is near campus. University of Miami has a slow yet extremely thorough process for assisting their studnets with off campus housing that indicates that they truly care about their students's wellfare.

Housing....

As long as you have housemates/roommates you'll be fine finding a place within reasonable distance that won't kill you price wise, but be careful. Apartments are available close by but they aren't always the most luxurious places. You have to remember that UM is located in Coral Gables, which is a veryyy expensive area to live in. A lot of people move a little farther away to save money and find something comfortable.

It's a Lottery

If you can find affordable off campus housing, the by all means go for it. On campus housing is a lottery and is not guaranteed for upperclassmen, not to mention very pricey.
