Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Despite daily griping about tuition costs, parking, thunderstorms, and hard classes, most students really seem to enjoy UM. Excellent attributes like the nightlife, weather, and culture seem to cancel out some of the bad things about being in Miami. For some students, these bad things include the unapproachable “hot” girls and guys on campus, while others find life in the dorms to be a challenge. The complaints about college are basically what you’d expect to hear anywhere. It appears that the bad things at UM really aren’t that bad, but the good things are very good. Miami is one of the coolest cities in the world for a college student, and that goes deeper than just the superficial bar and club scene.

Students who are unhappy generally figure it out within a semester and transfer out of UM, usually to somewhere closer to home. College is tough, especially the first couple weeks if you come without knowing anyone. Making a whole new group of friends for the first time since kindergarten is one of the hardest and most stressful things you may ever have to do. But the end result of this process is friendships that you’ll likely maintain for the rest of your life. Whether it’s your roommate, classmates, fraternity brother, or sorority sister, college is a time when you should make friends and have fun. Despite the initial challenges of coming to college, there are few cities in the world that are as fun as Miami.

Good Balance of Fun and Learning

Although the University of Miami tends to have a reputation for being a "party school," it has, in recent years, really improved its academics and on-campus student life. This year's incoming freshman class is the smartest class they've ever had, and our national ranking has increased dramatically in recent years. Being a student living on campus, I am aware of all the wonderful things that are going on around campus. There is always something to do, and there are always clubs to join. The school has been putting a lot of effort lately into making the school a more vibrant learning environment, and are promoting school spirit. There are a variety of classes and the courses are interesting and geared towards specific career goals. Professors are almost always available and very approachable and helpful.

All About the U

I've felt pretty at home at UM. Maybe it's because I've lived in Miami for half my life? I love the city, and I love the University. The people are fun, I enjoy my classes, the campus is beautiful, and there's always something to do. My involvement has been pretty superficial because I live far from campus, but if I had to do it all over again, I would still choose UM because it's a quality school. All the resources we need to learn are provided here.
