Sunshine Days

I like Miami and its diversity from all over the world. I love the beaches. The city is pretty at night, but I'm not one for the local entertainment within it. It's a place of migration; so many new faces visiting and interesting people to meet. Everyday is a unique opportunity. The weather is perfect; it's always nice and warm despite the seasons and that alllows me to play watersports even in the winter.

Miami is a big city, and there are a ton of stores and malls. My schedule allows me to go out and shop (but my wallet doesn't.)Thus, I'm more of an 'emergency shopping' person. Books, food, etc. I'm an academic student so I tend to avoid the nightclubs and drinking, ergo my life is pretty safe.

Depends on the Drug...

Lots of people smoke, it is very common to see smokers around campus. Weed circulates throughout the student body, cocaine is a possibility at certain parties. Alcohol is unavoidable.

Not Fun for the Non-Party Goer

Many of the parties thrown or off campus at frat houses or people's apartments. Thursday nights and Weekend nights are known for the lines of taxis outside the residential halls. The nightlife are all centered off campus or in the "Grove", transportation via taxi. There's almost nothing to do on campus at night unless you go to parties. Clubs are expensive.

Despite the Private School Pricetag, Miami Is Suprisingly Affordable in Many Circumstances

I got the highest offer of any school I applied to from UM (3/4th tuition). They are very generous with their scholarships. Additionally, they don't cut any corners or hit you with hidden things which I super appreciated. My sister's school dropped her scholarship because she didn't fill out a FAFSA on time even though it was merit-based aid, and the law school I'm at will do everything to cheat you into paying more. At UM, when my friends decided to stop school for personal reasons or whatever, UM froze their scholarship offers so they could return if they wanted and still have them. They also were completely helpful and reasonable about deadlines and such. So worth it!

Parking Is Hell

There is not much parking space in this campus in coral gables. You are assigned into differrent parking zones and the parking permits are expensive. If you want to find a good spot, you must arrive to school early.

Sucks for Freshmen

If you have a fake you might be able to go to the bars in coconut grove if they dont confiscate it. There are some pretty bad house parties around that are overcrowded and usually get busted. There is no partying in the dorms.

Someone for Everyone

I've made some of the greatest friends of my life here. Everyone is beautiful (so if you have low self esteem, you may feel pressured to look good, but I advise you to LOVE YOURSELF) and because of the extreme diversity, you can find someone/ a group of friends that have the same interests as you.

Diversity and Community

The University of Miami is very unique due to its diversity. Although I have only been here for 3 months, I have met lots of people from all over America and the rest of the world. I am learning so much about different cultures and religions just by being exposed to first hand experiences. Sororities and Fraternities here also set our school apart from others. Unlike other schools, the greek life here is very friendly and approachable. The different frats and sororities intermingle, and it is not as segregated or cliquey as like other schools. They are also very involved with philanthropy here, which is something I value greatly.

Good Balance of Fun and Learning

Although the University of Miami tends to have a reputation for being a "party school," it has, in recent years, really improved its academics and on-campus student life. This year's incoming freshman class is the smartest class they've ever had, and our national ranking has increased dramatically in recent years. Being a student living on campus, I am aware of all the wonderful things that are going on around campus. There is always something to do, and there are always clubs to join. The school has been putting a lot of effort lately into making the school a more vibrant learning environment, and are promoting school spirit. There are a variety of classes and the courses are interesting and geared towards specific career goals. Professors are almost always available and very approachable and helpful.

Living on campus is a great way to meet people and make connections. In reality, living on campus is the ultimate college experience, as being a commuter limits you to only being able to go to classrooms and be exclude from many extracurricular activities going on in campus.

Hot or Rainy! ALWAYS HUMID!

It's usually hot outside. Because it's Miami... If it's not hot then usually it's raining. Even when it's winter it's hot in Florida. During winter though, some native floridians will start wearing coats.

Also. It's always humid. ALWAYS!

Love, the Greatest of All Things

Home away from home, and one of the main reasons I didn't transfer after freshman year. The Greek community at Miami is relatively small, but for those who are in it, it makes the campus experience fun and exciting. Mixers, special events, beach days and formals make for a packed calendar.

The U Invented the Swag

Although a small school, if we compete we win championships. The football team revolutionized college football, track & field is a preview of who you will be seing on the podium in 4 years in the Olympics, and nothing rocks or is as much fun as Women's Volleyball. And for baseball, A trip to Omaha is expected, we have made 40 plus straight tournaments, and anything less than a trip to the CWS is a down year. Free admission and great concession stands gives you a great night out watching future MLB stars (Ryan Braun, Pat Burrell, Gaby Sanchez, Jemile Weeks) for less than six bucks INCLUDING your free admission - a burger fries and a soft drink. A TIME LIKE NO OTHER!! An eleven on a scale of one to ten is the time one has at UM sporting events.

Always a Party Somewhere

You could say kids at the University of Miami are into partying. There's always a party going on somewhere, and in a vibrant city like Miami, it's not hard to find something to do. The Grove is only a few blocks away, and it's the premier hangout spot for young students looking for a good time. There's a lot of clubs in Miami that are 18 and over, but I would be lying if I said no one had fake ID's to go drink and party at the more grown-up places. In any case, students that live off campus frequently have parties, and of course sororities and frats do too. Students usually get around either by taxi or the famous "Drunk Bus" shuttle that the school provides, which takes students down to South Beach and other locales.

UC Is Okay

The University Center gets pretty busy during the day but is dead when classes aren't in session. There's a convenient food court, a nice outdoor patio, and a pool that's open year round. However, it's an older building that could use a few upgrades. It's great during the day though to go relax, meet up with friends, grab a bite to eat, or get a tan.

The professors at UM are generally very good compared to other schools. Additionally, because of the (generally) small class sizes, they get to know you on a personal level, and are very willing to work with you.
