It's All About the U

Miami takes enormous pride in our athletics, we have a ridiculous gym and the sporting facilities are amazing. We share a football stadium with an NFL team, it's definitely nice. Even though the stadium isn't on campus the school provides coach buses for the students. The BUC is awesome too.

Welcome to Miami

There are so many places to go in the city and all around. The school holds events all the time too, but there are always art festivals and big name performers in the clubs and what not. There is always something to do in Miami.

Wonderful

The weather is ideal, raining mostly during the summer when classes aren't in, and breezy/cloudy and sunny during the rest of the year. Classes are only 10 minutes away on campus by walking, no more, and there is plenty of cover to walk under in the event of rain however, rain isn't no common occurrence. The campus is lively and students are always walking around outside and gather under the palm trees in the atrium.

The School Offers GREAT Free Transportation, but Public Transport Could Use a Boost

The metro and a bus take you to Miami airport, and the metro and the Tri-rail takes you to Ft. Lauderdale airport. Check for the cheapest flights. Campus has a great, free shuttle to get around. Honestly, except for the airport, you can walk to groceries, stores, restaurants, bars, etc. no problem. The school even provides free shuttles to Coconut Grove, the major bar spot, Thursday-Saturday nights. The weekend has free shuttles to the grocery store and Sunset Mall nearby. Miami really does a great job of taking care of its own students so a car isn't needed. There is also a free shuttle to the Medical school campus and Rosenstiel School of Marine Science, just check the times. A lot of clubs set up beach days, etc. with transportation, and friends with cars are great, too, just throw in some gas money.

Miami only had one metro line, which could definitely use a few additions. It is reliable, though, to the time table. To be fair, there are a lot of bus lines which will take you anywhere you want to go. I had friends with cars freshman year and a car starting sophomore year, so didn't have any transportation issues. Learn alternate routes to avoid US 1 traffic. Miami is a great city with lots to offer, so enjoy!

All of the Options of a Major City!

The Miami campus has enough food options to be content on campus. For more variety, head off campus. Being near a city, there are innumerable great dining options everywhere. Obviously delicious Cuban food, and all sorts of international and American varieties. The nearby restaurant tend to offer Miami student discounts, so keep a lookout. Some places can be a little further and need a car or metro, since we are in a city, but a lot are walking distance, too! Ask around for the best places. You can easily enjoy top dining, and pay the price, but there are a lot of affordable options, too.

In Addition to Academics, UM Has a Social Life

Academics is a first priority, especially when you are focused on your future. When you mCoconut Groove is the place to be, when you are of age. There is campus transportation to and from Coconut groove thoughout the night providing safe transportation for students. There is also downtown Miami, South Beach, Hardrock Hotel &Casino, and also downtown Ft. Lauderdale which all provide and exceptional nightlife. As far as underage, ladies get an exemption at some spots when being under 21 whereas guy do not. There are off campus house parties as well, if you find out the details.

Affordable International Cuisine Just a Few Steps Off UM Campus

Food and dining are just small parts that make up Miami. Restaurants are all over Miami and they offer cuisine from all over the world. Just outside of campus there are pizza shops, restaurants that offer cuisine from around the world, and supermarkets. Also, there are well known spots such as chipotle, Starbucks, and Dominoes. Within minutes are malls with restaurants, which can be reach by car or campus transportation (the school has a bus service that takes students to popular locations off campus). The prices are affordable

Hard Curriculum, but Hey, It's College!

UM is number 38 in the nation for a reason, it's rigorous! We work hard here, even though some may still refer to us as "Suntan U". Professors push you but it's nice to see they care for your success. Advising is actually helpful here. Classes do fill up rather fast but you still get what you need to graduate in the typical 4 years without any problems.

Never a Dull Moment

What's great about UM is there is never a time to be bored, unless you want to relax! The school provides shuttles to the local bar scene throughout the weekend so not only do you never have to worry about designated drivers but you also save money on cabs! UM also sets up so many activities all week long that the campus is always lively and active. I transferred here and it is a world of difference from my last school. UM actually provides you with so many ways to enjoy yourself here. It's truly an amazing school both socially and academically.

Clearly Here, but Not Overwhelming

It's Always Hot in Miami

The students at The U are gorgeous, and strive to be. Typical class wear is what most other schools would wear for a dinner date. Speaking of dates, there are plenty here. Although a lot of guys like to live the frat life, we have lots of relationships too! It's perfect for everyone!

You Actually CAN Study Here

When I tell people I went to the University of Miami, the first thing they often say to me is "I don't think I would be able to study there" or "I would be at the beach everyday." While the beach is nearby and accessible, this couldn't be farther from the truth. Students take their schoolwork seriously at the U, and it is a very collaborative environment conducive to broadening your education.

Campus Dining at University of Miami

Words Do Not Describe How Horrid the Food Is.

The campus dining could not be worse, the B grade that it has earned is inflated more than any grade you would receive in a class, ever.

Not only is it expensive, and the hours horrible, but the food is nauseating. Freshman usually have 14 meals per week, and look to move off campus after freshman year. It is an embarrassment that this food is served at such a prestigious university. I doubt highly that President Shalala realizes how bad the food is, because she would be outraged. Something has to be done, ASAP.

It's All About the 'U'

Despite our slow football season, the University of Miami is top notch in school spirit, football games, insane tailgates and athletic facilities. Athletes blend in to the everyday academic environment and still manage to shine during game time. Hurricane Force, our fan support group, does a great job offering incentives and promoting athletic events going on throughout the week!

Party Atmosphere

There are plenty of events to go to weekly and plenty of things to do at night, even on weekdays. The community is very supportive of students. Many local shops and restaurant give 10% discount to all UM students. The only downside is that crossing the streets can sometimes be unsafe. Many drivers in the area do not give pedestrians the right of way and people have been hit before.

Good Variety

The food court has a variety of foods to eat including subs, Chinese, Latin, and other fast foods. There is also a Quick mart for snacks and other small foods. Additionally, on Wednesdays, the Fresh Market comes to campus and fresh fruits, vegetables, and other foods are available. We also have a pizza food truck. And the infamous Rathskeller. However, the dining hall food does get repetitive!

New Athens.

The Greek life is both famous and infamous on the University of Miami campus. The are without a doubt the social gods on the campus where their parties break in the the new freshman and transfer students to give them the stereotypical view of college life. There is an entire street devoted to the multiple fraternities and soroities at the school with multiple forms of housing, truly making their presensce felt all week with their close proximity to daily acitivities. Most freshman strive to be accepted to Greek life por the parties and romantic life that is legendary. These factors drive all weekend party and social life decisions at the school with a familiar buzz every weekend. Most non-Greek students, however, view the Greek students as your typical modern day, "tool," and, "douche," that is just looking for their next beer and sexual encounter without a care about where their life's may be headed. They over embrace the college-is-one-big-party mantra to a fault that leaves most non-Greeks irritated and bitter.
