College Prowler Take
The majority of students on campus feel safe walking around at night, and there are tons of cops and security guards, as well as emergency phones in case there is ever a problem. Even though Miami can certainly be a dangerous city at times, UM is located in Coral Gables, which is a fairly nice neighborhood. Still, this doesn’t hide the fact that several incidences have occurred on campus in recent years. The crimes that were committed, which included burglary and sexual assault, were recognized because of UM’s policy of e-mailing the entire student body whenever a serious crime occurs on campus. This is a practice that is not in effect at most of the country’s universities. It makes students aware of problems that may exist, though the amount of students outside late at night rarely changes after these alerts. Although UM officials are very concerned with crime on campus and they heavily investigate any threats, it’s important for students to know that crime is, at times, an issue. The Department of Public Safety should be commended for its honesty about what’s happening around campus. The department’s truthfulness in these matters makes students feel more comfortable walking around at night. No matter how many police officers the school hires there will always be a risk. The most important thing is that an overwhelming majority of students feel safe on campus and that there is very little threat of extremely serious crimes.

There's a lot of small theft. The campus is located within a suburb, so it isn't that bad, and I feel safe walking at night. But, really, anyone can walk on campus.

I believe that security on campus does vary based on gender. If you are a guy, it does not really matter, however some girls feel that walking alone at night is not the most safe thing to do. I believe that the campus is pretty safe, and I have not felt insecure yet. |

I would say that the security on the UM campus is above average, and that our campus is in a safe neighborhood. I’m not worried by e-mails regarding crimes that happened on campus. Actually, I’m proud to have our school post warnings like that to let us be aware of what’s going on. |

Did You Know? After 10 p.m., no one is allowed into the residential colleges unless they are a resident or are signed in by a resident.
There are over 70 emergency phones located throughout campus. The phones are easy to spot because of their blue lights. They dial directly to the Department of Public Safety.
The Student Health Center administers flu shots and common immunizations at various times through the year. They’ll even come to you, as part of a program that gives flu shots outside all of the dorms at the beginning of flu season every year.
