College Prowler Take

The lack of efficient public transportation in Miami can’t really be blamed on any specific thing. For one, Miami isn’t set up like New York or Chicago, both cities whose metropolitan designs make it more convenient for trains and buses to get around. Since we’re all living on heavily-paved swamp land down here, nothing can really be built underground. There are some semblances of public transportation, most notably the Metrorail, which is an elevated train system that runs from Medley, in northwest Miami-Dade, to Kendall. One of the stops of the Metrorail is across the street from the University of Miami, making it accessible to students. The downside of the Metrorail is that there are some sketchy Miami citizens riding the Metrorail. It would definitely be a good idea not to ride alone.

UM does its part to make transportation easier for students without cars. Recently, UM has offered bicycles to help its students get around. In an effort to be green, UM has also employed a Zip Car system that allows students to carpool and rent cars when they need them. The method students use most to get around is the free shuttle that takes you to grocery stores, shops, and movie theaters, as well as to various buildings around campus. Students are given rides by UM shuttles to the football games that are held in Dolphin Stadium. Most students don’t really complain about the limited amount of public transportation. Instead they focus their time on borrowing their friends’ cars or taking a free UM shuttle cleverly referred to as the Hurry ‘Cane. Cabs aren’t really widespread in Miami, but there are enough to get you home after a night of drinking or to take you to the airport, although most students prefer the cheaper Super Shuttle.

Miami has very good public transportation. You can take the Metrorail and the Metromover all around the Miami area. You can also take the Tri-Rail all the way up to West Palm.
