Bike Areas Must Be Used – Often times students want to run into their residential hall to grab something or even stay for a while, so they lock their bikes up by lamp posts and railings in front of the building. The security here is pretty strict about it and if they catch you or see numerous bikes, they'll go around placing warnings on each bike to move it to the bike area, or else it will be taken away.

Go Big, Go Blue! There is nothing like athletics at the University of Michigan. From Football Saturdays to the night basketball games, the sports dominate this college. The town and campus comes alive when the sports do. Not only are the varsity sports amazing, but there is just about every sort of sport imaginable here with the club and IM sports. Athletics is definitely one of the highlights of the University of Michigan.

Something for Everyone! Ann Arbor is a great college town. It has so many fun shops and restaurants that keep everyone occupied and busy. It also has great areas like the Wide World of Sports, the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, and the Campus Recreational Buildings to use in the areas of sports. Not only does it end there, but the athletic facilities are amazing- Ann Arbor is the greatest on game day. It is a great size- not too big to get completely lost in, but not too small to get bored in- there is something for everyone here!

Dining Halls – There are many dining hall options, but the food is not the best.

There are many computers available all over campus. Look and you will find!

Health & Safety:
Personal Safety – There have been many crime reports about students being sexually assaulted in the late hours of the evening. It is best to walk with someone when walking after 11pm.

Michigan is a school full of the top 5% of their high school. Everyone took all of the AP Classes, played the sports, was in every club that ever existed, volunteered all of the time, and still found time to get stellar grades. So here there is a very small chance of getting a scholarship from the University. My advice? Look for scholarships elsewhere.

Every Saturday in the fall Ann Arbor becomes a different place as everyone heads for the Big House. Campus is crazy and so much fun. School spirit here is like nothing I've ever seen before. Basketball and hockey games are also a lot of fun however they are not the huge event that each and every football game is.

As a vegetarian it is hard to find variety in the campus food. A lot of the time I have to resort to salad and vegetable mix repeatedly. However, if you are looking of vegetarian/vegan food, East Quad is the place to eat. If you are NOT vegetarian or vegan Mojo has the best selection and also the freshest food. I would also recommend trying Markley at least once as they have make your own pizza.

Marijuana Is Decriminalized in the City. Marijuana is a decriminalized offense in ann arbor, so there is quite a bit of it. Worth noting is that the university is on state property, so possession of marijuana on campus is still a felony. People usually aren't obnoxious about it.

I love it here. The class choices are great and the atmosphere is incredible. U of M is really good at getting the small city feeling out of a large city with lots of options and opportunities. The only thing I don't like is that the more credits you have the earlier you can register for classes, so as a freshman you get stuck with all of the classes that nobody else wants and it's hard to find out what you want to do as a major when all the classes you want are taken by people that already have an idea.

Dorms Are Like Summer Camp – I'm enrolled in the Residential College at the University of Michigan so I'm required to live in East Quad. Each dorm around here is known for something. East Quad's known for their vegetarian and vegan-friendly cafeteria, Stockwell is known for being really fancy, Mojo is known for the best cafeteria and is located right next to the gym. Like summer camp, each living house is known for good and bad things, you just have to find what works for you.

The availability of computers is great, and the speed is a little above average. However, the amount of free paper given to each student is a little stingy and there seems to be only a very select amount of places on campus where you can print off things you find on the University site, at other printing sites they'll just print off blank pages.

On Campus Bus Service – The on campus bus service is fairly convenient, the only issue is that it is not always reliable. Dress warmly, because in the winter you could end up waiting 15-20 minutes for a bus.

Michigan is an excellent school because it allows you to see the best and worst in people from different walks of life. You are able to be independent but there are resources available to you if you seek them out. Professors are extremely knowledgeable about content and there are boundless opportunities for research and obtain knowledge about any given subject. In addition, there are so many opportunities for people to participate in extracurricular activities through student organizations. There are restaurants galore on campus and many more close to campus (i.e. Downtown Ann Arbor, Briarwood Mall). Everything you need is within walking distance and if it's not, you can take the shuttle bus. There are opportunities to explore the arts and enjoy nature (arboretum). There are also opportunities to join student government and make a difference in the community. There are plenty of job opportunities on and off campus for students as well. Michigan is an awesome school! Go Blue!

There are multiple off campus housing options from renting houses to living in apartments. The off campus housing is often very close to campus and are close to bus lines so that you can access campus easily without using a car (free busing for students when you show your ID). Parking is usually only an issue if you live in a house off campus because a lot of students will park in neighborhoods so that they don't have to pay for parking.

There are three meals served a day in all dorms where you can use meal credits. You can also save your meal credits and use them at the stores (i.e. The Underground in Markley, The Blue Apple in Bursley, East Quad) inside the dorms to purchase things like Burgers, Hot Dogs, Fries, Ice Cream, Beverages or Snacks. There are vending machines in all dorms. There are numerous restaurants on campus that serve a variety of food: Starbucks, Big Ten Burrito, Pancheros, Good Time Charlies, Pizza House, Bubble Tea, Za's, In and Out, Noodles and Company, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chinese Restaurants, Cosi, and the list goes on. In the Union, there is Wendy's, Pizza Hut (though it used to be Magic Wok), Subway, Sbarro's, Mrs. Fields and the smoothie place.

I was surprised how friendly people were and how easy it was to make friends. The classes are hard but if you put enough time in you will do well. Even though the classes are big, I find the professors approachable and helpful. Don't be scared to talk to them, they usually are more than happy to help. There are so many opportunities to try new things that you ever had a chance to experience in high school- take advantage of them! Ann Arbor is a great college town, there is lots to do.

There are plenty of places all over campus that offers free use of computers. But beware, they are tough to come by during exam week. I think it is important to have your own laptop, as they are often required for a class. You may want to bring your own printer to school as well because Michigan only gives you 400 pages to print per a semester. I have gotten internet everywhere expect in my psychology lecture- only macs were able to get internet there for whatever reason. Odd.

Let It Snow. It snows a lot in Michigan. Even if there is a foot of it outside that does not stop the student population from heading out. Cabs are easy to find in Ann Arbor. We work so hard during we would not let a little bit of brisk weather stand in our way of some down time. Classes are NEVER cancelled. A lot of professors will be lenient with commuters, but even in a blizzard, expect to still have class to go to.

Not Too Shabby – Not really too strict. I have heard of people being busted for drinking in their dorms, but it really is not all that often, unless you are advertising it. If it becomes a problem for the students around you, something will probably be done about it. If you use your discretion things and behave around your RA and the campus police you should be fine.

Living in Ann Arbor. Expensive. I pay more for cost of living than i do tuition. (which in my case is very fortunate seeing as I am out of state). There is availability of living places but if you look past the prices they ask. There is a website on the university housing linking to a search page for off campus housing with specific criteria. It is relatively easy to find places, but you have to be quick. Parking is rough if you do not have a house. If you live in the dorms (and are not on north campus) then it will be hard to bring a car at all. That is the bonus of off campus housing, they often come with a few spots.
College Junior 2011-12-31T19:10:36Z
Parking is pretty easy on North campus, but central campus is a little more difficult. Most houses have parking and if not streets are available for parking everywhere.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
