Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity is a word you will frequently hear during campus tours and in speeches from University of Michigan administration—and with good reason. Michigan is diverse in many ways. The student body is made up of members of virtually every race and ethnicity, including a large number of international students. People come from all over the world to attend the University as well as to teach at it. The University is the workplace of several prestigious women's and civil rights activists. Expect a wide range of views from your course instructors. You can also expect to work with a broad selection of individuals in all of your classes. Michigan's history is full of landmark events that give it a reputation for being a diverse university. In 2010, the University elected its first openly-gay student assembly president. Several groups at the University have also supported adding "open housing," also known as gender neutral housing, as an option for students to live with someone of the opposite sex in residence halls.

However, cliques form at every university, though usually not as extreme as in high school, and UM is no different. Some students feel that there's still an overrepresentation of white students at the University; others feel that the campus is made up of mostly upper-class individuals because of the high cost of attendance for out-of-state students. Students say some people don't branch out enough. The University of Michigan thinks diversity is important, and an open environment allows for these sorts of mixed feelings to be brought up and addressed.

Little in Greek Life

Although the campus might be diverse as a whole, if your in Greek Life, diversity is minimal. Greek life is dominated by those who are Jewish and is otherwise mainly made up of rich white people.

At U of M there are many different background ethnicities. I have been exposed to many different races. That is one of the benefits of going to a large school. You learn about many cultures and religions.

Very Diverse in All Ways

This campus is hugely diverse in many different areas. Because it is part of the greater Detroit metro area, I believe it has a lot to offer as far as varied ethnic, religious, sexuality, racial, socio-economic backgrounds go. It's progressive attitude towards these things may invite a more liberal attitude, but also invites diverse people to learn in a place that accepts all kinds. Like most higher-ed institutions, there still is a majority of white population. I want to say this hovers around the 60% rate, other minorities compromise the other 40% with emphasis on african-americans. It also has a wide variety of international students.

Did You Know? In the early 2000s, the University was involved in a legal battle over a previous admissions policy that allowed admissions decisions to be made on the basis of race. The Supreme Court ruled that while the policy promoted diversity, it was not justified as a way to redress for past racial injustices. The ruling spurred support in the form of many "friend-of-the-court briefs" asking the Supreme Court to reconsider. Affirmative action is still a hot-button issue on campus today.
