Greek life at the University of Michigan isn't just a social scene, nor is it the only social scene on campus. About 20 percent of students are involved in Greek life. At Michigan, there's a wide range of social, community service, and pre-professional Greek organizations. Students agree that they're all a great way to social network, and many rush (visit Greek houses in an attempt to become a member of one) by mid-September of their freshman year. After joining, students tend to live in the charter house of their fraternity or sorority by sophomore year. These houses are known for throwing parties, which are usually open to everyone.

Some criticism of the Greek community is that it is a way to "buy" friends because you have to pay fees to become a part of the organization. Others don't want to subject themselves to the stereotypes associated with specific Greek houses, but students say you won't get flack whether you are in Greek life or not. It's a personal choice and at times a big commitment. But being in Greek life must pay off; otherwise, a fifth of the student body wouldn't bother with it.

Not Too Out of Control but Still Greek Life

You can tell who the frat guys and sorority girls are. Luckily ours don't seem to be as obnoxious as other campus'. They do wake up super early (8:00am on football Saturdays...5:00am on holidays) and are supperr loud.

Very Fun

Greek life at the University of Michigan is a collection of very enjoyable and well rounded organizations. Fraternities host parties most weekends which much of the student body attends. Students who go through the rush process attend many and varied activities such as a photo scavenger hunt. Sororities are very close knit and widely popular among students. Both types of organizations are involved in many activities that branch out from conventional activities of a fraternity.

Did You Know?		Each year, the Greek community puts on Greek Week, which is a week-long philanthropic event with various competitions between teams of Greek organizations. There is a “Mr. Greek Week” competition, as well as Greek Sing and Variety competitions that pack Hill Auditorium. Fraternities and sororities pair up each spring for their “pre-parties” the following fall, which take place at fraternity houses before each Michigan home football game. Don’t be surprised if you’re dancing to music and drinking beer at 9 a.m. on a football Saturday. It’s a Michigan tradition. Many fraternities and sororities have lavish formals that often take place as far away as Chicago and Toronto for an entire weekend.
